Löhlein - Piano Music

Georg Simon Löhlein

Georg Simon Löhlein (1725-1781) was a German theorist, teacher and composer. At the age of 16 he was enrolled into the Prussian army, where he was made to serve for 16 years. In 1763 he was able to continue his study of philosophy, ethics and poetry in Leipzig. There he also practised music under the direction of Johan Adam Hiller, who made him musical director of the Grosses Konzert; he lived mainly, though, from the proceeds of private tuition. His Clavier-Schule, which appeared in various new editions for almost a century, reworked the material of C.P.E. Bach´s Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen into a graded order of difficulty. Löhlein became a well respected man in Leipzig, and in 1781, just before his death, he was appointed Kapellmeister of the Marienkirche in Danzig. His compositions are however of secondary importance to his various writings.
