Debussy, "La fille aux chaveux de lin" (Preludes, Bk 1) September 07, 2007, 02:59:12 AM by rachfan

I've never posted this piece before, so thought I'd do so now. Debussy was innovative and daring in using pentatonism in his melody, giving the piece almost a Nordic flavor. It's unclear whether this is an observer's actual visual impression of the girl with the flaxen hair, or perhaps just a daydream. Either way, it's most evocative. This lyrical prelude is in A-B-A form with a cadential coda.
Note: When I was transferring this to a mp3 digital file, I didn't pay close enough attention to the output volume meter, so it sounds a bit louder than the original recording. You might want to simply turn it down a tad.
Comments welcome.

Please help with Debussy's Flaxen Hair August 31, 2006, 04:43:10 AM by leucippus

I've decided to start learning Debussy's prelude # 8 from his book I.
I guess this is more popularly known as "La fille aux cheveux de lin" or "The girl with flaxen hair".
I'm a raw beginner and I'm not familiar with music theory, but I want to try to analyze this piece a little bit before starting in on it. Especially since it has 6 flats which I'm not used to. In fact, I seldom play in keys with more than two sharps or flats.
So my first idea was to learn the scale for this key. But what key is it? Gb major, or Eb minor?
Which scale(s) should I practice? Gb major, Eb minor (melodic), Eb minor (harmonic)?
How do you analyze and approach a piece when you're a complete klutz at music theory like me?
I do have every intention of leaning and studying music theory this winter, but what can anyone suggest for right now, other than to forget about trying to learn this piece all together.

La Fille aux cheveux Lin - I have probably spelt this incorrectly. I love the music but am finding it difficult to learn and it has taken me 2 weeks to know the first 12 bars. I work full time though and do not have long to practise. My question is, as an adult learner of 18 months, is this too ambitious for me? Thanks for any advice Patricia

I was looking over the sheet music and found a chord in the 6th bar that I couldn't play...the span is too much for my hands(unless I use my nose) !How should I play this part? A recording of mine plays the lower e detached, previous to the chord. Does anyone else have this problem or am I missing something? Thanks for your help. Mark
