Fingering in Liszt Sonata Passage November 10, 2008, 07:02:17 AM by jbb
|
I think anyone studying this piece will have a different section that is most difficult for him or her. For me, I found the alternating arpeggio section beginning at m. 40 to be elusive in terms of the left hand. I see several alternatives for the fingering:
E D B G E D B G E (or B A F# D B A F# D B) 1 2 3 5 1 2 3 5 3 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 3
or, take the first E with the RH chord (BGE played with 542), then play the D with the thumb of the right hand and the LH arpeggio as:
B G E D B G E 1 2 4 1 2 4 5
I find the first (1235) difficult because my pinky is somewhat short, the second a bit of an uncomfortable stretch (particularly for the second arpeggio) and the last the most comfortable but am concerned with the break in the RH.
I'm curious as to what people here who mastered this passage have used.
I can offer the hint that in the passage that follows beginning at m. 51, it's much easier (at least for me, to get all the notes to sound consistently) to take the first note of each group of eight RH notes with the left hand.

Liszt Sonata March 04, 2008, 05:23:43 AM by ralessi

Hey all! Been a while since I have been around, hope everyone's holiday season was a good one. Anyway, I have been out of school for a while, which has given me some great "me" time, and I have started working on the Liszt sonata. Saying starting working on the sonata actually does not even begin to describe what I did. I COMPLETELY immersed myself in the piece collecting any recordings possible, reading the wonderful "Liszt Sonata in B minor" book, any analysis of the piece I could find (which weren't many), and really just ANYTHING I could find about the piece of music. It truly is one of the greatest/most important pieces of music written, given all of the circumstances. Anyway, does anyone have anything on the piece at all they would be willing to share with me? Only finding 1 good analysis accompanied by a few articles and things really is uncool and I want so much more than what I have. Anything at all would be so greatly appreciated. Another question that I have is; Does anyone know of a publishing of the piece with Liszt's own marking/fingerings? Thanks for any help!
Cheers! Rick

For Gold members: Liszt's B minor Sonata autograph December 23, 2006, 10:56:25 PM by donjuan

Liszt's original manuscript of the B minor sonata is available to download for Piano Street Gold members.
I checked it out, and I tell you: it is an amazing experience listening to the recording while reading Liszt's note scribbles. Somehow, the music makes so much more sense, following the original sheet music. It even includes Liszt's fingering and whole sections that were crossed out. Going through it really paints a picture of the man and makes him seem so much more human than legend.
If you can, I strongly suggest you download it!

Well, I am not requesting it, as it is in the gold member's section: but let's discuss it!
I have been told that he changed the kind of paper he wrote upon as time went on. Also, I am aware of the grandiose ending he chose, and near the end of the piece where another motive could have very easily been kept, but was taken out. K. B. Hamilton said he was tempted to add it back in himself...

Thanks for the edit, admins, and for the link to the sonata.

How difficult, technically, is the sonata? According to the amateur Van Cliburn blog, two of these were played in the same day on the finals (45 minute programs).
When I watched it, they seemed very showy and rather difficult, not to mention my opinion on its musical value. Where do the difficulties arrive? Are they technical, or, as Duchable feels (http://youtube.com/watch?v=NhrlOyFhrOA) are they easily handled after developing one's "technique base." Then, it would be musically extremely difficult.
Discussion has been done here: (http://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php/topic,20287.0.html)
Thanks.
