xx Hungarian Rhapsody 2 help ( again ) strange technique ..
August 18, 2008, 04:37:37 PM by mjin1

Hi. Ive been working on this piece for around a year now, and there's not alot left that gives me much trouble.. Everything is near up to speed, it's just a matter of cleaning it up a little for the parts that I haven't practiced as much.. Except this one part.

It's very close after the main theme of the friska, where you are going back and forth very quickly hitting a high C# with 5... Now, the problem is, playing this part at an acceptable speed isn't the hard part, the problem is playing the top C# quietly and still hearing the other part of the right hand. Apparently, according to my teacher, liszt seems to have written this part (Deliberately or not) inbetween where a piano has dampers or not, to I guess demonstrate how much control you have with 5.

So what I'm saying is, the top C# that you have to hit when jumping back and forth rapidly over an octave has to be quiet, yet, it has no dampers, so it's very VERY easy to hit it loudly, and infact alot of performers and recording artists do hit it loudly..

My question is, how in the hell do you go about learning this with any consistency? Ive had moments where I'll just do it totally relaxed and it works perfectly, but other times I cannot get myself to not bang the top key no matter how little my 5 moves.. .....

Is it just alot of slow practice, or is this a technique that just takes years to build up? It seems like you have to be completely relaxed.. like I'll try it just straight from taking a break from the piano, full speed, and it'll be fine. I think it's because I'm relaxed, because I'll try and do it again.. and it'll become less and less quiet the more I play that part.. so I'm guessing my hand is tensing up.

Just so you know, I started taking lessons about this time last year, however I've been playing piano ever since I was like 4. .. not with much consistency until the last couple of years. My teacher says there is no way that I'd be able to have as much success on this piece without having a fair amount of talent, though she says for this specific delicate 5 technique that it takes a number of years to get it that way, though, i'm hoping I can learn it within a couple of months if I practice right.

What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

question Franz Liszt-Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2
May 25, 2008, 04:41:38 AM by learner of liszt

I am learning this piece as part of my summer repertoire, and I have a question concerning the Lassan: after the first fast run (going from G# above middle C to a very high E down to several B's) it goes through about 16 measures, then does to measures of trills. After these trills, there is a section of 6 measures of 32nd notes. I have a lot of trouble playing this part, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice.

xx La Campanella or HR Nr. 2
January 12, 2008, 09:01:54 PM by shadow88

Hi
I'm a big Liszt Fan and as next piece I want to play La Campanella or the Hungarian Rhapsody Nr. 2 (Not the Horowitz Arangement).
Which piece is harder to play? Or are both same difficulty?

xx Hungarian Rhapsody No 2 suggestions
January 04, 2008, 04:38:09 PM by mjin1

Hi.

So here's a little background before I ask my question..

I've been playing the piano ever since I was little, however, never really seriously. My parents never made me practice, and I never really liked it.. Until about 2 years ago. I started playing the music from the "Castlevania" video game series by ear, on the piano.. Somehow found out about the Romantic composers, which brought me to Liszt. Well, after about a year, pretty much every Castlevania song would come easily to me and I got bored with them.. so I got my courage up and started to learn the second Hungarian Rhapsody(From the start of the Friska.)

About the time I started learning it is when I started taking lessons, which I'm very thankful for.. My teacher is a former student of Dr Suzuki, and she really has helped my technique on this song. I've been working on the correct fingering for the song for about... 3 or 4 months, and I can, at times, play through the first 6 pages of the Friska with great speed, something very close to the way marc andre hamelin plays it. Though I generally try to slow it down to the way other performers play it just for consistency.. Of course, having worked so hard on this song, my teacher is baffled that I even am able to get this far with it. She says I can actually play faster than she can.. haha. My only regret is that I didn't start real practice earlier in my life.

Anyways, my questions/concerns are these:
I can't play through this consistently like I want to. I know it takes time due to it's difficulty.. and there are other factors. It's always cold in my house so my fingers suffer from that.. and a piano tuner has said my piano hasn't been 'regulated' in way too long, so apparently he says certain keys won't repeat quick enough or play pianissimo consistently due to the felt and hammers or something like that. We're gonna get that looked at. However..

What are some ways to solidify this very fast technique? I'll have certain days where I am unstoppable, I can almost play through it with my eyes closed and without any stress in my hands or arms, then the other days It'll be the complete opposite. I can't make any speed and I run out of stamina way early. I'll admit, over the months it is getting better, but slowly..and I think I am the level of player to be able to accomplish this. But..

Are there certain practice techniques for this type of really fast and difficult song that is just better to solidifying it or does it really just take alot of time, given my experience? Thanks.

PS. I don't really know what kind of student I am since I can play advanced level songs, but I haven't really been in lessons that long.. I just posted this question on this forum since I think higher level people would be more familiar with it.

xx Question about Hungarian Rhapsody 2, bar 35 - 40
December 28, 2007, 03:49:03 AM by fiasco

I'm having a difficult time working out these measures, I'm practicing without a teacher and can't tell exactly what to do bginning with bar 35:  LH plays a low G, then rolls a D-G-D-B#.  Over this RH plays G-B#-G-B#.  Now, is the left hand faster, is the D-G-D played during the same time as the first two RH notes, or are all these notes played together?  I'm having a hard time even practicing these slow, esp. measures 39-40, it doesn't seem to sound like anything slow.  Should I learn both hands seperately then just throw them together and hope for an automatic pilot thing?

Hey all,

I'm a piano major working on this Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No 2.
Very fun piece... but so difficult to play!
Anyone have any advice on playing his runs evenly?
Or just any other specific advice that was very helpful to you?
I'm open to anything.

=)
