Hey, didn't you enter the Crescendo Music Awards earlier this year?  I was playing this etude in my media player and noticed your name in the artist place, and knew I had heard of it before.  I think you played a Liszt piece.  Or a Vine piece, I'm not sure.

Yes, I did enter the Crescendo Music Awards and played a Liszt piece in the finals - were you a competitor too? I hope I didn't suck too much when you heard me 

BTW: do you study in the midwest? just curious....

Actually I did compete.... but sadly did very poorly.  Although, I think it was a blessing in disguise, because I think that my poor performance has actually forced me to become more self-critical of my playing since then, to listen more to what I play. 

If I remember correctly, I was impressed by all of the finalists!  And yes, I did happen to be a freshman at that same university the competition was held at.  Not exactly the best facilities, eh?  But they're building a new music building, so who knows.

Nightscape, do you plan to do Crescendo again? Since I did not win first prize, I am still eligible to compete next year if I want, but I'm not too enthusiastic about the judging procedure they use. Did you know they have point scales in ten different categories like appearance, phrasing, dynamics, note accuracy --- just like an athletic competition! (So my advice to you would be to do what this year's first place winner did and play a piece nobody's heard before so they, at least, won't take off half a point for every note you miss...they don't have the scores in the finals). Plus, more than half the judges in the final round are not pianists and wouldn't know an argerich from a helfgott if their life depended on it, needless to mention that they have no idea which pieces are difficult and which are easy.

The people that run the competition are very friendly, and I like the atmosphere of the event. Plus there's just so-much too-much money to be had! hmmmm.......

I'll probably do it again, since it's right there (I mean, I live less than five minutes away from it!).  You're right, they wouldn't be able to tell if that guy missed any notes in his Vine sonata.  I didn't know about that wierd judging system though. 

Mabye I should play an original composition?  I wonder if they would let me do that?

I'm a little confused by this.  Why would someone get in trouble for performing a piece and sharing it on a forum?  It's not being sold.  The notation is not being provided.  Can ajw400 perform this at a competition? Or do you have to get permission?
