Hello,
I'm working on transcendental etude no. 4 (mazeppa) and have some questions. BTW...I'm using the edition provided by
http://www.sheetmusicarchive.net
. On the run starting at measure 6, I can't work out the fingerings efficiently. Could anyone give me advice on them?
Another trouble spot is the first measure of pg. 4 (it's an octave above the last measure of pg. 3). The way I've been trying it turns my right wrist sideways to the left swinging my whole arm...any suggestions?
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

I think the silence on this topic might be attributable to no-one here having played this piece?
I learned Mazeppa a number of years ago, and I used the following fingering for the opening run:
Right hand: 1 2 3 5 2 1 3 2 1 2 3 1 2 3 5 4 3 2 1 3 2 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5 2 1, etc, repeating the same pattern. At the top of the scale, from the high F down, I use: 5 2 1 4 3 2 1 3 2 1 4 3 2 1, etc.
Left hand: 5 3 2 1 2 1 2 3 5 3 2 1 3 2 1 1 (slide the thumb) 2 3 1 2 3 2 1 3 2 1 3 2 1 2 1 2 3 5, etc.. At the top of the scale, again, I use: 1 2 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 1 2 3, etc.
This is a rather eccentric fingering, but it works extremely well for me. You may be able to find another way (along the same lines) that suits your hand better.
As for the other passage you mentioned, try the following fingering for the right hand:
On the eighth-note triplets in the lower part: 1 2 3 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 (thumb on C-sharp) 2 3 1 2 3. Your fifth finger then goes on each quarter note in the upper part.
Try these suggestions out and see if they work for you.
