Gnomenreigen - pedalling

I've heard different recordings of Gnomenreigen... Cziffra pedals entirely, Bolet has nearly none, Ogdon has none...


What about you?

I haven't tried playing it but I think it sounds better with none - Claudio Arrau is my favourite.

It's been a while since I played any of Gnomenreigen but I would use no pedal in places, the opening for example, and use pedal in other places.

How could anyone play it with NO pedal. There has to be some.... especially in the presto possible et ff section, especially the downward scales. It also helps if you use small amounts all the way through, makin sure it isn't obvious.  When I play gnomenriegn I pedal quite a lot, however I don;t like the way Cziffra pedels the intro, that should by staccato in my opinion. The piece sound dreadful with NO pedal, its good to use lots peadl just after section where the left hand does the repeated notes, leading into the vivvacissimo section with the octaves and thirds in the left hand. I'm sure Bolet and ARRau pedal that section as I have heard both and no been aware of any staccato, and its impossible to play legato with the fingers

I cant think of pedalling all the time for the duration of any piece.  The pedal must always do as the ear commands
