wow! that was surprising.. the kid looks like he just walked off a basketball court and then -!!!!!!- musically, it was pretty boring, but watching a little guy like that physically be able to do that is... wow!! I mean, he had to lean really far from side to side to make up for the short arms! haha really fun to watch, thanks instromp!

I didnt find it so amazing.
For someone that is being hailed as a child prodigy, he is not that good. He misses a fair amount of the notes and plays dead. Fine, yes, he brings out the melody etc etc, but that is one of the basics of piano playing. If we are to be astounded every time a pianist brings out melody lines, then pray tell, what is classical music coming to?
His posture is anything but perfect and his hand position is screwed. I also find his gestures and comments very fake and rehearsed. He thinks he is brilliant, and that will most probably eventually be his downfall. I needn't explain it, its obvious why.
Maybe I expect too much. Where I am from, there are no half measures.. Our standards are so high, and our results so perfect and exceptional, that mediocrity is just not an option. I despise mediocrity. It doesnt matter how old he is, in this world, sorry to say, its survival of the fittest, and the competition are brutal and merciless.
He is not bad, he has potential to go far, he must just get a very strong wake up call. And soon. Life is too peachy and pampered.

yep.
Id say he's in pretty good shape to succeed, compared to many 10 yr old pianists. Sure, it is obvious he doesnt understand the music, but his technique is a good base for someone his age. He can learn all that musicianship stuff later, no problem at all..

I mean he is only 10 years old.he still has more to learn about piano. His posture is better than mines at least. And if he is a child prodigy, which he isnt, then why is he playing at a local piano wherehouse?? I mean give him a break, could you play what he was playing at 10?? Then if u could then bravo to you. Anyway with much more practice he can bring it to "life" since you said he plays "dead".You shudn't be to critical, eventhough where your from standards are high. At 10 i couldnt even play what he was playing. There is alot of potential in him to get far through piano.

Wow what's this guy's problem... You can't say that a ten year old playing that etude is considered mediocrity. Sure he didn't fully understand it, but that's not average compared to other ten year olds. He might be considered mediocre if compared to older pianists... Comon, he's only ten years old, lighten up

If it's really true that pride goeth before a fall, one wonders why a similar fate hasn't befallen you. At least this kid bothered to pretend to be modest, whereas your own pride (justified or not) is so great that it blinds you to the fact that your asking people to worship you in this fashion will reap something that is, um, not worship. You should work on your social skills.
Yes, this little guy's Ocean etude was a sea of wrong notes, but we don't actually know whether he thought his performance was good or not. I've heard of teachers who tell students to look pleased with their performance even if they're not, and they might have told him to do the arrogant body language he did just after he finished the piece.

thats insane even tho hes made some wrong notes and there wasnt much feeling in the piece that is still a tecnically demanding piece and i think he was very good. Of course hes not going to fully understand it at 10 years old, who would?? as he matures his playing will too and with more practice he can bring out the feel and understanding of the piece.

Just watched the video and it's quite good for a 10 yr old kid. Glad to see someone so young that is really into piano playing.

This little guy can also play fantasy impromptu...I wasn't even surprised he could play that since he could this etude. He's definetly going far with his talent.
If only I was able to start at that age

I think this kid is really amazing. He just go sit there and play the Ocean Etude like it's nothing.
And who cares that he doesn't use the right handpositions etc?... This kid plays like he's comfortable with how he wants to play it. And I think his technique is very good, especially at age of 10, else he wouldn't play the Etude like that. Also, I think his touch is good; a quite "smooth" touch.
Anyway, respect for this kid. The fact that he's into playing the piano so much is already a really good thing, especially at his age. Also, I get the idea that he really enjoy's what he's doing, and I don't know many kids who like classical music.
I wish him all the best in the future!

Strange feelings tell me this is not coming from the deepest recesses of your humility.

a pianist by the name of cecile licad played chopin concerto in fm when she was 10. she played op. 10 chopin etudes for a lesson with serkin, learned it in 16 days. that's a prodigy.
the kid may not be considered a "prodigy" according to someone's standards but he sure has the potential! it's not the kid's fault but the teacher's that he's not able to play that clean. i believe he can do as well as cecile licad, if only his teacher knows how to develop the talent.
he has good temperament too.

It seems many strictly schooled pianists only judge on technique and whether the "rules" by which a certain piece should be played are followed. You dont see how this kid has a charm in what he does, and for any non-pianist seeing a 10 year old do this is just incredibly impressive/touching.
"ewww he has incorrect posture, I thought I heard his chair squeak in bar 117", etc.
Well to me he seems very mature and confident in his playing. Without being too much.

This kid is obviously talented. But what I found interesting and somewhat disturbing is one comment on YouTube (where this clip is also posted) that said "I thought only Asian kids could play Chopin's etudes." And someone earlier in this thread said something about the kid looking like he just came from a basketball court. He didn't look like a basketball player any more than any other kid. I wonder...

What I really liked about this performance is that the kid somehow managed to bring out the choral melody without "banging it out" (as many pianists do) but, rather, by producing an incisive sound. It is difficult to judge from video, of course, but this child may really have an extraordinary sense of touch, sound color etc...
As for the wrong notes -- come on, honestly: Who has ever heard a LIVE performance of the ocean etude without wrong notes?? This is a tricky etude to get even 98% accurate.

That was amazing! I found it hard to believe he was doing it, i find it hard to believe anyone could do that, it is AMAZING. How anyone cannot be amazed by that i don't know even you are a professional pianist with amazing qualifications you must still find that brilliant especially from a 10 year old!
