Chopin wins because he had stronger striking ability and better ground skills, so Tchaikovsky would tap out from a rear naked choke or armbar, or get knocked out in one round.

The only area where these two overlap (and thus can be compared) is piano solo and piano concerti;  Gee, I wonder who is the better composer for piano

For me.... tchaikovskys piano concerto no 1 is the only composition that comes close to chopin. But after my own taste, chopins piano concerto still beats tchaikovsky. And so does all of chopins solo competitions. By the way...Tchaikovsky didnt write fantasy impromputu, ballade no 1, and revolutionary etude....hehe.

This is the worst possible choice of composers for a comparison I've seen yet. Everyone knows that Chopin sucked writing for orchestra and Tchaikovsky sucked writing for piano...How can you compare the two?

The Concerti of Chopin are some of my favs, but let's face it...

Chopin's piano concerti focus too much on the piano to get that effective tension between the soloist and the ensemble. The orchestral writing is banal, even if it does compliment the piano, it still doesn't stand on its own. That's why he's been critiqued so much for it.

Musical Quality= Unbelievable

I vote for chopin, because he wrote the best piano music (but not that prolific really).
Tchaikovsky is a bit boring to me and yes his piano concerto is good but it does get a bit boring after a while after the 100th time... lol. I suppose even the Rach concertos can get a little same-y after a while. But other than the concertos (1-3 and the piano/orchestra piece) he didnt create any masterpieces.
I dont like the ballet music... nor the orchestra stuff.

Tompilk, what do you think of the operas?  I'm quite in love with Eugene Onegin.

I've read somewhere or another that Tchaikovsky was actually best known as an opera composer in his day.

I just don't understand the morale in comparing any two persons, let alone two individual composers. Chopin's music is very good: look at any of his compositions for the piano and such. Tchaikovsky is very good too: look at his operas, ballet music, orchestral pieces, and such.

for me. I love Chopin  more then Tchaikovsky..  because I love Piano I guess.

I think mozart´s is very dinamic in his piano compositions but his sonatas really bore me although they are more difficult then what they sound, i love his piano concert bye the way.   Chopin on the other hand uses more variety in notes and he plays  them to get in and out of chords, it tends to float,  unlike mozart who tends to stay in certain chords, ideas , or melodies in a piece. Thats why I like chopin more when I listen to his music.

I believe sergei r was referring to Tchaikovsky's solo piano works. His 3 piano concerti are great.
