Scriabin-Prelude for the Left hand
« on: July 05, 2006, 04:16:56 PM »

What grade is Scriabin's Prelude for the Left Hand, op.9 no.1 (abrsm)?
Can someone with small hands play this (what is the largest interval)?
It's a great piece (so is the following Nocturne).

Thanks.

In general, Scriabin is not for people with small hands.

The musical approach to Scriabin's music is even more intricate than mastering the technical difficulties.

Very high level!

I just looked at the sheets and it is not easy at all. It could easily be a piece for two hands.

Don't worry about the hands issue.  You can roll anything chord you can't reach.  I've been learning the Nocturne, and there are some chords that no one could possibly play without rolling.  Reaches of nearly two octaves.

Scriabin himself apparently had small hands, so it is certainly possible for a small-handed person to play the piece. I have small hands and I play a lot of Scriabin. I just roll the chords I can't reach. This still says nothing about the difficulty of the piece however.
