I was having trouble w/Moonlight (go on, laugh  Embarrassed)), so my teacher suggested we try some easier pieces. Among others, he suggested Pour le piano (the entire suite, mind you).

From what I have seen on this forum, I must conclude that he has gone insane. Has he? Or have I misinterpeted things?

yeah, debussy... if i remember right it's three pieces.. a prelude - sarabande - toccata.

I like some of Debussy's stuff, but some his other stuff I'm not thrilled with at all.  The "Pour le piano" suite.   I like the toccata the best of the three pieces, but I'm not really overly thrilled with it either.

As far as difficult is concerned I have no clue as I can't play either Debussy's "Pour le piano" suite or Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. Grin   

It does sound to me like the 3rd movement of the Moonlight Sonata would ultimately be more difficult, but that's just a guess based on listening to all of these pieces.  They are all certainly beyond my reach at the moment.

Try the prelude, it's got a few difficult spots (a few double notes, hands crossing, sustaining bass notes that must be held throughout) if you can't play that, then I'd stay away from the suite, and move down to the Children's Corner (Snow is dancing, Dr Gradus ad Parnassum) or the Suite Bergamasque.

I would think the toccata is more virtuosic than the 3rd movement of op.27/2

the toccata's a b*tch because it's fast and quite technically demanding in several areas and just wears you out- if you want AMEB standards it's on the Lmus list, the Sarabande is Cmus (which is not difficult), the prelude i have no idea, i sightread it once and the only thing that really scared me was the glissandos, which is because i don't know how to glissando properly...i've never played the whole of the moonlight so i can't really compare. but imo if you can't do the 3rd movement i have a feeling the toccata would scare the hell out of you. the other 2 movements would be ok i think...
