Bartók - Etude op.18 nº2

My first post. I thought the best way to introduce myself to the forum was actually posting some of my playing...

This was in a students audition in my music university a pair of years ago, with Bartók's second etude from the op.18 set. Comments and suggestions are very welcome...

To tell the truth, I'm not a Bartok fan (I play none of his music), but I found this piece somewhat uncharacteristic of his idiom.  It is almost impressionistic and even gives a slight nod to Scriabin at times.  It's a wonderful etude.  As importantly, your playing was superb--excellent clarity of line throughout and very expressive.  Your command of your well-developed technique totally serves your musical intentions thoughout.  Congratulations! 

I find it surprising that you received no comments on this recording when you first posted it.  If nothing else, I hope more people will listen to your performance now, who perhaps missed it before.

this must be very difficult to play so smoothly and as well as you do.  i find it kind of scary and jarring - but the playing is perfect.  and, really like a mix of debussy and scriabin as rachfan says.

The Bartok Etudes are for sure one of my favorite sets, and definitely my favorite piece by Bartok, along with Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion.  When can we hear your No. 1?   


You definitely seem to have the technical aspects under total control (except for possibly that one little double-note passage, which is pretty damn close to being very clean anyway).  Really the only suggestion I would have is to possibly play this piece... and I can NOT believe I'm saying this... less furiously, especially if performing it with the other two, as this would add more contrast to them.  I just think there could be more color and dynamic expression.  Overall, an extremely good performance of an extremely difficult work.
