Schubert op. 78 (D894) fingering
« on: October 13, 2006, 10:36:47 AM »

Hi, I am at the last movt. of Schubert's G major sonata (op. 78, D894). As I find some of the opening passages a bit akward, I was wondering about fingering alternatives. Do you have any suggestions for:

- Bar 3 (my left is at its streching limit to get this 11th chord, how do other pianists solve this?)

Then, I would be interested in knowing what fingering is used for all the patterns of thirds in the main theme, specificall in bars:

Bars 11 and 12
Bars 16 and 17
Bar 19

Any suggestion is very welcome!

 Dear Cloches:
First, please let me correct two things: the chord is in the second measure, and it's not an 11th chord, but a suspended fourth.. About the fingering, did you try to play both C and D with the thumb of right hand? Then, in the second beat (when the tenor procedes to A), just slip your right thumb back to the D alone.
About the thirds of bars 11-12, I would use 12 13 24 35 13 24 35, with a slight pedal (less than half) to link CE to DF#. Then, in the lenghty run (bars 16-18), I would start with the same pattern till F#A, and then 12 13 24 35 24, again with the tricky pedal.  Cool
Or just play everything with 24 and press deep the pedal...  Grin
Hope it helps!
Best!

Dear Desordre,
Merci, you are right about the chord, I meant to say an 11th strech. By now, my left got almost used to the strech and I have to experiment with your fingering and my original one. Your suggestion puts less strain of the left but somewhat reduces freedom for expressive phrasing in the right - at least to me. Thanks a lot for the other suggestions and the music sheet, which provides other useful alternatives - they are all currently "on trial"!
