I just looked at da music for da hammerklavier and it doesent look nearly as hard as ppl claim is to be, i also looked at da op.111 and dat looked harder. Why do people say da hammerklavier is so hard. it doesent look dat hard at all.
Please no flaming. I hate dem flamers. And whoever says da hammerklavier is da hardest piece by beethoven, go look at da score and compair it to any other of da beethoven sonatas

Mr(s). IBTY: I'm not sure if you tried to play it, beyond just looking at it. The problems begin there... I think that it is a very difficult piece of music, and desconsidering anything else, it lasts 40 minutes or more. In my modest opinion, these lenghty works are always a huge challenge, because in a recital you have to "fight" with your stamina and focus. Try to aim at a flawless performance of it and there is such a goal. Given the fact that it's a very deep and meaningful music, and "playing all notes" is just 50% of the work. So, if you can play the sonata without blurs, with a consistent interpretation and still alive, my congratulations: I can't for sure. You pointed out opus 111 as harder than the opus 106. May be. The former is far from being easy. Best! PS: would you mind to don't use these "da" and "dat"? It's a bit boring to read this way.

Alright, I gotta agree with Comme for once... Notes should never intimidate you - metronome marks should.
Allegro (half = 138, in 2/2) Allegro risoluto (quarter = 144, in 3/4) You fail to realize that BY AND LARGE these are only real difficulties when taken at speeds which hinder their execution.
Still think this is easy, kiddie?

its not just the technique, but the musicality.
Hammerklavier has insane voicing/phrasing and the fugue... oh god.

Look closely a couple times at the score. have you ever played a fugue? if you have, the difficulties should be evident. have you ever played lated Beethoven? That's some hard interpretation work there. Technique is not the hardest thing about this piece. all late LvB is hard, which I learned when I learned the Bagatelles Op.126.

By any standard, the Op. 106 is difficult, but that has NOTHING to do with its greatness. The structure and musical depth are incredible. It's a work that will never have a final interpretation, even in its composer's mind or intention.

When I first glanced at this I thought the same thing. Then I started learning it.
The first movment is not a major difficulty but...it's one thing to play the notes, another to play them with finesse, contour. The slow movement is twenty minutes by itself and quite a task to pull off without putting people to sleep. Then there's the fugue - I know people with phd's (yes in piano) who can't play it. I do but it's a bear of a piece, particularly after the first three movements.
The hardest part, though, is mastering the scope of the piece.
