I have an elementary aged student that would like to begin competing. How do I get involved in competitions? Are there any for beginners?

joybear, you said that the student was elementary age, does that mean they are around 5 or 6? there are several competitions that are aimed for age groups, such as most comps in my area for "under 7s"... so I suppose you could ask for advice in your community, whether they have a council office or something... otherwise, there are some piano competitions advertised in magazines, and online. They are magazines especially for music educators to get their students involved in programs and competitions. It sometimes helps to be a member of certain music societies. I don't know where you live, but guess not anywhere near I am.... :p maybe you could ask the members on this board to see if they live near you and find out more info....cheers.
