IU Faculty???

One of the schools I got into was IU, and I have no idea who to approach to possibly study with next year... they all seem great.

i would choose menahem pressler.  played with eugene ormany? !  wow.

usually don't they assign a teacher to you - or can you have your pick?  i thought the professors picked their students.  but, you never know.  just make yourself appealing to the teacher you want by finding out and playing their favorite music.  sounds like whomever you get you won't regret having.  besides, there are many classes besides piano lessons.

There is a strong tradition at IU that if you ask a teacher to be your teacher they will take you.  There is also a great tradition that each student, regardless of who the principal teacher is, is encouraged to play for many others, informally, in masterclasses, in chamber music sessions and even occasionally in private lessons.

That said, and as much as I love them, Neriki and Dubinski are in the lower side of the spectrum, just as Pressler is in the higher one.  That said, I learned much more from playing for Shigeo than for Mr. Pressler.

Brancart has great technique, and is famous for getting people with incomplete equipments up to speed rather quickly.  Auer also has great technique, but has the opposite reputation.

Hagunauer, Naoumoff, Weiss, Cohen and Watts were not around when I attended, but all of them are great pianists and I would be very surprised if they are not great teachers as well.

Seek out the advice from professors of other instruments as well.  There is but one music.  Go to masterclasses religiously, everybody's.  Practice a lot and stay healthy.

And would you please say hi to Professor Karen Taylor from me?  She will not remember my name, so no need to use it.  She is fabulous.  You would be a fool not to play your Debussy for her.

I've narrowed it down to Auer, Brancart, Cohen, and Pressler.  I figure getting lessons with two or three of them would be nice.  But who???

It depends on the availability of the teacher...
Try to contact them as soon as possible.

Have you heard them play?  You may want to go to the one whose musicality is most in tune with yours.

Visit them and ask for an audition. They will give you a lesson and you can evaluate your chemistry.

If I was in your feet and had that decision to make, I would most likely ask Mr. Cohen first.
