I know that Richter, towards the end of his life, used the score during his solo piano recitals.  There was even a page turner on stage.

Does anybody know of any other well known pianists that use the score opposed to playing from memory?

I think Artur Pizzaro does, but I'm not 100% sure. Somebody told me once.

Marc Andre Hamelin does.
He says it enables him to learn more new scores in less time.

Yea, MAH does it. I remember him doing it on the Reger Bach variations.

I think pianists who use the score for the classics are pretty rare.  The only other person I can think of who did it regularly was Myra Hess.  I wish Hamelin would have used the score when he memory-slipped his way through Beethoven op.109 and 110 in Munich a year and a half ago. Smiley

I took it for granted that he must know something I don't, so I asked him about some of the miscreant notes I heard, esp in the 2nd mvmt of op.110, where one passage, which is repeated 4 times in the mvmt, was wrong each time, but always the same.  I just assumed he must be using a different, more in-the-know edition, but he told me he hadn't checked the score in two years.  Yikes!

I don't routinely memorise (except the really popular classical pieces that people usually want to hear) as I would rather use the time to learn new music and expand my repertoire.

Allan Schiller recently played in an informal recital from the score (even though he had memorised it) because he said it would then be enjoyable for him as well!  Cheesy

the only pieces he uses it for are the more modern pieces. He doesn't for Alkan and romantic or classical music.
THe only pieces I know he used the scores for are:
People united
yedidia 3rd sonata
any roslavets
sorabji (i think)
I bet he used scores for his ornstein too. Email the Sorabji archive. they will tell you.

I went to a concert where Ivo Pogorelich used the score for everything.

Would you believe, the page turner messed up once. [like, fell asleep on the job]. He had a cold - and was caughing [don't know how he fit it in, but he did, LOL], and one time he caughed, and then waved his hand like "turn the page!" I thought that was a pretty bad flub.

it was kind of an odd concert [recital] ...

I also recall attending a recital by Bernard Roberts where he played Beethoven's sonatas from the score with the help of a page-turner.
