Not sure if this is the best section on which to post this, but it is with gret sadness that I have to report that the death of Rostropovich has just been announced.

Best,

Oh, I don't know. I really don't. Tout le monde lointain indeed - in a way that Dutilleux never intended, surely. Not quite sure about the greatest ever, but certainly one of the very greatest after Casals - and one who, as part of his immense agenda as a supreme musician, did far more than even Casals himself (or almost any other great cellist except Rohan de Saram) for new music as well as old, in his case both as cellist and conductor. His legacy will be with us indefinitely. But he isn't. We have to try to come to terms with that. Frankly, I have no idea how to do so. I can say no more now.

Best,

Alistair

he apparently came to terms with it.  after all, he was 80.  he went to back to russia before he died - but i guess that he did a lot for letting people know about russian repression by living in paris so long.  but, a russian is a russian - therefore he died in his own country.  they must be very proud of him.  perhaps it is closed minded to think any country owns a musician anyways.

I heard him conduct Shostakovich's 5th Symphony last year--it was shattering in its power. The audience kept calling him back for curtain calls until he took a very attractive violinist by the hand and led her off stage...the old dog!  Wink

He was an incredible musician and humanitarian who will be sorely missed. R.I.P., maestro.
