I'll admit, Richter's talent was also unusual.
Yep... but for different reasons.

Either his playing is too fast or your ears are too slow.
The notes are there to be heard, comfort yourself with the fact that most people, like you, don't have the listening skills.
ok. i can hear the notes. but its still a blur. for me, its much more exciting when played with clarity and musicality, and not as a showpiece

No, I did not mean that, but you can dream whatever you pleased.
BTW, history shows that the more talent people have, the more they work at it, and less they talk about it.

op10no2 you are so blind to what technique actually is. Has tone production never occured to you as the cheif aim of technique? Speed is stupid. I've witnessed at least 20 people in person play the etude faster than richter, and are they better pianists? NO!! Richters technique was amazing and you are just showing your own ignorance and stupidy in saying otherwise. When will you ever learn that speed is not technique?
Any idiot can move fast...look at Wunder!!
And all these other pianists you rave about, and they are all nobodys. Little flashes in the pan, with people like hailing them as virtuoso.
I dont care how many people who can play that etude faster than Richter...but dont ever dare to put WUDER in the kind of idiot as you did....If you think you can do better than Wunder...then show us...otherwise just shut up( I mean you can all explain about technique and whatsoever but if you put him as any idiot who can move finger fast...then show us that you are worth saying that)....

why don't you just post a recording franz? i think he has failed to mention that he plays all of op 10 (not sure about 25) and i would put money on it that you would enjoy his 10/4 more than wunder's

lol I am currently trying to get all of op10 together as a set...it is rather difficult to say the least!! lol!! Maintaining them is hard, stupid errors start to creep in everywhere, and since I have other stuff on the go I can't devote all my time to op10. I have HUGE respect for people who can actually play them all at one time. I have never tried to get through it in one sitting yet, but I can't imagine anything being harder than going from op10no1 straight into op10no2. Thats a real killer.
I have played op25, but never in one go, I did them all seperatly. I did the big ones op25no6, 8 11, and the rest are not to problamatic. In fact I would only say I can "play" op25. I only half did some of the "easier ones". I don't like op25 as much as op10, so I didn't want to do them properly, so I just learnt the notes so I had all the chopin etudes available in my repertoire lol

Well, I blowtorched my head, stuck it in a few paper shredders, got a big fat guy to kick me in the nuts, some woman to attack me with her...tentacles?, went into the copy room, stapled myself a few times, cut my hand with the huge paper-cutter and finally smashed my head in some copymachines. Think I also got blown up by an exploding microwave.
Fun game

Now that we've all found out that Op 10 4 can't actually play the piano, all of his technical mumbo-jumbo is complete idiocy. Oh. 10 4 Franzliszt is right by the way, the fingers are hardly used in playing. You use gesture to break the music into manageable pieces. The fingers are unreliable. Plus playing purely with your fingers builds up a lot of excess tension. I'm telling you this in case you actually decide to learn how to play someday. (op10 4). Anyways, I still hold that Perahia's is the best recording. Richter's recording is an amazing technical feat as is Wunder's, but I still think that Perahia's is the most musical, although most musical is definitely subjective. I like Freddy Kempff's recording as well, though not as much as Perahia's. For me, Perahia is the go to for all the etudes.

That Richter video is fast-forwarded. See how the napkin lands on the grand when he throws it in the beginning, before playing. The napkin doesn't act like that because of great technique, it's simply against the laws of physics:P

To me that "napkin" acts exactly like any other napkin, or for that matter handkerchief would behave in a similar situation, regardless of greatness of technique.

I think what that means is that because the video is old it's impossible to know if the speed at which it plays is the same speed at which it was recorded.

But then the pitch would be different, exactly like in old tapes or LPs, played with different speed, no matter whether the audio track of that video is in magnetic or optical format.

I think it's possible it's real. It's also possible that if the tape was sped up that someone could have digitally altered the pitch of the audio back down to 440 and no one would know the difference. Thoughts on that?

I heard this recording first, about 25 years ago, when there was no digi, at all. I still have an old analog version recorded from Russian TV archives. It's the same.
BTW, Richter's commercial video version of Chopin 2nd Scherzo was edited out, to remove some "crazy" moments. I have the origianl, as well.

Actually, I believe Richter's Op.10/4 is "not his best achievement" (
) compare to some private TE recordings I heard. The bootlegs of no.2, Feux Follets, and Wilde Jugd from Kiev's House of Scientists (50s) are nothing but absolute jaw dropping. Nothing like that could be ever heard in the whole history of piano playing.
On the other hand, although I fully appreciate and love such a display of firework, for me Richter is first and foremost is an INTERPRETATOR.
Such works as Beethoven Diabelli Variations, Sonatas No1, no.12, Scriabin Sonata no.6, Prokofiev Sonata no.6, Rachmaninov Concerto no.2, Schubert Sonatas B-flat Major and G Major, Debussy, and some others, for me stand out as JEWELS in the whole history of world's art of piano performance.
For some of those pieces I could find some performances which would be "closer" to my heart, but it is hard to find anything more powerfull in term of personal authority and artistic magnificience.
Best, M
