They do it bacause they're brainwashed by the media into believing that women should be size 8 or smaller. They believe that anything bigger than that would be considered obese.
But, as womens brains are not connected inside properly, allowances have to be made.

I think you may have answered your own question.
People don't "go" anorexic on purpose, it happens to them.

Anorexia - and most eating disorders - can often have roots besides media pressure to look a certain way. One of the most common ones in children and teenagers is related to a feeling of powerlessness. Stuff happens to them - be it 'normal' pressure from school and so on, or something more sinister such as abuse - and they either haven't been taught proper coping mechanisms or it's something that they feel is outside the scope of normal coping mechanisms. They feel bad things are happening and those things are out of the child's control, so they find something they can control to give them something to cling to - and often that thing is food, because children often don't have that many things in their lives that they can make absolute decisions about.
I speak as someone who watched a friend go through anorexia as a teenager, and thankfully she recovered fully. The root of her problem was her parents' extremely messy divorce and then her subsequent problems with her new stepfather - the family situation left her feeling insecure, unloved and unvalued. She didn't know how to deal with it so she became anorexic to have something - anything - in her life that was firmly in her control. And then, when the family finally noticed how messed up she was, it became a way to get and keep their attention - the only time the fighting stopped was when she was ill enough that they pulled together to get her through.
An eating disorder is almost never an illness in itself, it's a symptom, and the underlying problems can be horrendous to sort out.

all becos they lack a hobby or passion such as playing the piano or coming to Pianostreet... therefore they lack some purpose for life... therefore they can be easily influenced by peer and media...

Too many girls care too much about their weight...just an observation. It begins from 13/14/15 year old girls to 60 (!) year old women, including my mother and her best friend.
You go to a restaurant, and they order....SALAD! Buy everything with 0 fat. But when you tell them, that juice has approx. as much calories as a coke, they are like "What?!? impossible". Interesting, not many people can tell the calories of any given food/drink by its consistency and taste.
They are extremely careful to not do exactly one thing: eating normal. I keep telling them, the human body is not a machine, but they won't listen.
-.-
I also knew a girl at my school who died from starvation last year. She was extremely skinny and was at the hospital half of the year. I assume it's some kind of compensation for things they don't have in life, or for bad experiences, they compensate through control over their body. I Don't know, of course.
There's also a teacher at our school who became anorexic over the last and this year. You can immediately tell, that there's something that eats them up (literally). In reverse, i assume obese people are control freaks in one aspect and in order to compensate, are uncontrolled with eating.
It's sad...

I forget what country you live in, but a size 8 isn't exactly "thin" in the US. I think usually 4/6 is "thin", and 2's and 0's are like... too thin.

It's psychological in most cases.
However what I hate is pro-ana sites. I absolutely despise the things, and no-one can shut them down!
All eating disorders need to be combated by a nutritionist and a psychologist, not groups of teenage girls.
(And besides, I like my curves!

I worry when some of the disgusting emaciated stick insects that parade up and down fashion show catwalks are sometimes seen as role models.
Personally, i don't like thin women and broom handles like Jodie Kidd makes me want to send her some burgers. I much prefer "curves", which my current girlfriend has more than her fair share of. Infact, she is almost a perfect circle.

Yes. My wife passed her driving test the other day.
Now we can share the driving.
I'll drive to the pub, and she can drive back. Sorted.

Of course people don't "go" anorexic on a whim.
It's not exactly a lifestyle choice despite what the pro-ano websites will tell you. A lot of these sites are actually set up by wannabes, cultural trend victims and bandwagon jumpers.
Here are a few random facts and theories about anorexia:
Many anorexics are victims of child sexual abuse.
Anorexia is a psychiatric condition and a mental health issue, but not a mental illness. Anorexia can't be 'cured'. Like alcoholism, it's with you forever and it can only be managed.
For some, starving themselves is a metaphor of wanting to "disappear" from a male dominated society. For these people it's about denial. Denial of food equates with denial of sexual appetite, denial of one's right to exist (this is the feminist discourse)
For some, anorexia can be triggered by a consumer society that equates "skinny" with "beauty" and foists unrealistic aspirational images on young women in movies, magazines and the media (Marxist discourse)
For some, self-starvation is an attempt to stave off sexual maturity by maintaining a prepubescent body and rejecting "becoming" their mother (Freudian discourse)
For some, anorexia is about self discipline, denial and punishment. Starvation can also induce a sense of euphoria, much like meditation, or running a marathon (the aescetic's approach to eating disorders)
For some, it's a 'control' issue. Some anorexics substitute controlling what they eat for a sense of control over their lives. They reason, I mightn't be able to control other aspects of my life, but at least I can control what goes into my body.
As you can see, anorexia is no simple matter. It's complicated.

Ah - a welcome beacon of good sense! I'm not quite sure, however, that I share your pessimistic view that in no cases can anorexia be cured; I've known a number of people who've suffered from it very badly and seem to have gotten through the experience and come out the other side of it in a state of full and sustained (so far) recovery).

1 out of 10 for helpfulness; 8 out of 10 for light relief (although I'm not so sure that an avoirdupois approaching 300 pounds - which I'm nevertheless sure you do not possess - qualifies for "light" anything...)

Perhaps this might arguably be seen as symptomatic of the notion that the most vociferous promoters of the skinny obsession are of US origin; over here in UK, 8 is regarded as slim, 6 and below thin and possibly skinny.

More often than not, we don't, no. That said, at least it has now become generally recognised and accepted that the disease is of psychological origin and the professionals that can best help with cases of it are clinical nutritionists to deal with the symptoms and psychiatrists to address the causes.
