You've evidently become a big Finnissy fan during the past few days; what brought that about? Yes, you'd better get a ticket while you can! And yes - these events are absolutely not to be missed by anyone who appreciates remarkable musicianship and pianistic splendour.

By the way, Jørgen Hald Nielsen, the Danish pianist with whom Jonathan will give his third Warehouse programme, will be playing my Variations & Fugue on a Theme of Grieg in Esbjerg, Denmark on 13 November in a programme that also includes Bach/Busoni, Ravel/Sorabji and a Schubert Sonata.

I will definitely be attending 1 and 13 November and hope to see as many of you at these concerts as can possibly get to them!

I have no doubt that Jonathan himself will record it when the opportunity arises (although, as far as I am concerned, the sooner that opportunity does indeed arise, the better!); in the meantime, he has, as no doubt you know, made a substantial number of CDs of other Sorabji works (many of which are world première recordings) and has begin to prepare one of that composer's most important pieces (that immediately follows the Strauss transcription), his Sequentia Cyclica. I'm also hoping that not too much more time will elapse before he records Opus Clavicembalisticum.

There can be no question that Jonathan has already contributed more to the Sorabji cause than any other performer in history, not merely in the sheer quantity of work that he has accomplished but also in the textual precision, lucidity, structural clarity and compelling manner of his interpretations which have by now become recognised as benchmarks of Sorabji performance; clearly, there is much to which to look forward.

What about Yonty Solomon? Is it true that Mr Powell was inspired by Yonty's playing? I heard that from someone. I love Yonty's sound. I have note heard Mr Powell play, but I really look forward to the concert, and really hope I can make it!

Yonty was the pioneering spirit behind Sorabji performance back in the 1970s and Jonathan Powell has indeed a great deal of admiration for the best of his work. I have known Yonty Solomon's playing for more than 30 years and there are certain works in which, to me, he is well-nigh incomparable, not least Iberia and the Goldberg Variations. It seems to me a great pity (although not for his students!) that he has devoted so much time to teaching at the expense (sometimes) of his performing career. His performances and recording of Sorabji's Le Jardin Parfumé are legendary.

How do I get tickets? Can you play on the door?

Mr Powell might not appreciate that! But I'm sure that you can PAY on the door! (which is what I know you really meant). I only wish that I could get to it myself.

Yes - or rather no. He didn't record it commercially. He played it for a BBC broadcast in around 1987, I think (without looking it up); they may or may not (almost certainly the latter!) still have a copy these days. There was also a bootleg recording done at his world première of the work some 10 years earlier.

Wow, Jonathan! Those are some excellent-looking programmes. The June date with all those Latvian dances is a really unique billing. I had no idea John White had written such a large number of piano sonatas. Last I remember it was around 100 and now it's looking like it could reach 200!! Those really need to get published or made available in some way. In any event, I live in the States, so I'm unfortunately not going to be able to see any of these likely unique performances. I hope you record them and make some new recording posts on your blog.

Yes, very funny, of course - but it would be good for him to go there and perform, since he has such an interesting repertoire that embraces not just Sorabji and Finnissy but - er - GRIEG! - and so very many other diverse things - Scriabin, Rakhmaninov, Marx, Szymanowski, Medtner, Bach (not to mention some living Scots composer whose name escapes me right now)... There must be a way! And the sooner the better!
