I am having trouble with the short appoggiaturas (leaping from the appoggiatura to the main chord) in measures 18-29 and 162-169 of "The Great Gate" from Pictures at an Exhibition.  Also, the large leaps of both hands in opposite directions in m. 89-106 and 114-161. Tongue I know these sections hands separate, but I am having trouble joining hands without missing half the notes because I watch where one hand lands but not the other.  I try it at a slow tempo, but even then I can't seem to get it.

Any suggestions for how to execute these large leaps?  Any help is much appreciated! Smiley

I recommend Liszt's Exercise for Leaps in Contrary Motion, from the Technical Exercises.  I believe it's in the second volume of the three, each volume bearing 12 books.

For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

i know its an old thread. did you get it alrite by now? yes, the leaps are ultra hard and unpianistic. this is what i did: i rewrote the coda. yes, and now it works way better and even has much more grandeur, and more satisfying effects. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JatZZt0hYY
