Following recent forum dynamics on music appreciation, I'd like to offer some analogies that serve as extreme cases. I have a feeling that music appreciation would fall somewhere within the spectrum.

So, music appreciation is like

1. Testifying in court as an expert witness. You'd have to be an expert in your field, otherwise you wouldn't have been invited. If you're not an expert, you don't have a voice. The venue is public and you are staking your reputation in your testimony.

or

2.  Choosing who you date/marry. Personal preferences on physical attributes, socio-cultural background, economic status are generally seen as absolute prerogative. The choice is a private matter and outside the realm of public scrutiny.

I hope these examples would somehow facilitate dialog on music appreciation.
