For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert. (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

A tough call...overall, I like Berman's enormous power and sweep, but Cziffra has a bit more sparkle and seems a tad more authentic. I thoroughly enjoy both.

Precisely the difference between Hemingway and Hugo. Hugo's rough-hewn romanticism carries incredible epic power at the expense of being a little less scintillating.

Berman's effortless power was quite remarkable. His touch was quite distinct. It's a shame he's no longer with us.

And Hemingway wrote his books all by himself...

What's that supposed to mean?

Hugo hired assistants to write parts of his books. Alexandre Dumas did the same thing.

Do you have any sort of documentation or reference I could see? I find that hard to believe.

Care to elaborate? Examples?

Jazz is to classical what Mcdonald's is to great restaurants. It's trash and will allways be even if lots of people like it.
