10=absolutely delirious. and down to lower numbers: the lower the number, the less excitement toward the statement. 0=neutral negative=dislike the statement

You forgot 6.
I voted 5, because I'd take it as a nice compliment but overall I know where my abilities stand, and I know there are a lot of people better than I. It's very difficult to make me delirious because I know what kind of excellent musicians really exist. The people who get worked up over compliments, in my opinion, often are locally good pianists who don't have a perspective on the real competition out there.
But there is one way to make me delirious--which is when I can see that my artistry really touched people. Nothing makes me happier.

Your poll is flawed. If 10=absolutely delirious and 0 = nuetral concerning your initial premise, then you need more than just one negative vote to show your dislike for the statement. You should have something like 0 to -10 on the other side where -10 = absolutely and disgustingly revolted to the point of barfing up not only your lunch, but a few internal organs as well! Cheers allthumbs

I guess it depends on who it comes from... generally I would be glad that the person liked the playing, but like thalbergmad said, I know my level and other's compliments won't change the actual playing!

Jazz is to classical what Mcdonald's is to great restaurants. It's trash and will allways be even if lots of people like it.

How about 'deeply dubious as to the informant's criteria for judgement?'.

I voted for 4, i would never take somebody seriously if he/she said that and i know that somebody who really knows something about music would never say that, to nobody :p

so, no one has voted for 9. slightly less than becoming absolutely delirious is apparently not popular.
hmm..and i would like to know who voted for 0-tis a possibility that these people are indeed virtuosi, hence the statement would create no excitement to them. or...maybe i am wrong, but still pls let us know who voted for 0. thx

hmm..and i would like to know who voted for 0-tis a possibility that these people are indeed virtuosi, hence the statement would create no excitement to them. Or because you knew it wasn´t true. And criticism really depends on who gives it. If Sokolov or Marta Argerich, Hamelin etc gave you positive criticism or if drunk average Joe on a friday night called you supermeglomaniac virtuoso over the canyon 2000 (whatever the superlative form of virtuoso would be) I believe it would be a difference. But then again you could argue if it´s more important to please your peers or reach out to an audience, virtuoso or not. I don´t like the word...
