what kind of music is played in a bar?
«

Just wondering, what kind of music is often played in a bar?
For example, You wouldn't play Chopin's Impromptu Fantasie usually in a bar because it can be considered too loud at some time.
I feel the kind of music played in a bar is usually something like Traumerei or music of Richard Clayderman type....
Any way, can any one tell me more concretely about what kind of music is often played in a bar / restaurant?

yeah play like schumann songs or any romantic pieces/20th century pieces. THose are very relaxing and soothing. Just choose a very light music but not boring. Or you may wanna play classic songs, beetles songs or Five for fighting
those are fun.

Loud bars require louder music, quit bars require soft music. Also, the type of music depends on the type of people going to that bar.

Debussy (claire the lune, gymnopedies etc), Krieg (spring song etc), Chopin (nocturnes), Schubert, and all the other songs wich you would put on if you wanted to sleep :p

My problem with blues and jazz is that it doesnt draw much attention (in a possitive way) wich is annoying if your earnings also depend on how much the customers give you.
I make more money with playing decent classical music than with background jazz.

When playing informaly (i.e bar)i like to play very light hearted stuff, sometime even comical becuse i have noticed at college that if i play something like the Schumann, then people tell me to cheer and stop been so pesimistic, so somthing liike the Schubert Moments Musicaux would work, or thing people can sing along to but it all depends on the sort of bar you are in

Try Satie Gymnopedies.
99.9999% people will like it, and isn't "loud". They will think you're playing music from a commercial, though.

In general, I would say play a lot of the stuff people are most likely to recognize. Clair de Lune, Pachelbel's Canon, Moonlight 1st movt, minute waltz, Turkish rondo, definitely the gymnopédies, maybe some Scott Joplin if you know any. Then in between you can play some of the stuff you really want to do. But nothing should be too long.

Jazz is to classical what Mcdonald's is to great restaurants. It's trash and will allways be even if lots of people like it.

It would be awesome to be one of those hilarious cartoonish pianists playing through some roaring ragtime pieces while everyone else in the bar is fist-fighting and breaking bottles. For that, you also have to know when to duck when someone throws a stool, beer stein, or human being in the direction of the piano.
Learn some works by Les Six and Co. A lot of their piano work from the 1920s was meant to convey a lighter side of music and fits in very well with a festive environment. Though it's a two-piano piece, I've always found Milhaud's Scaramouche, 2nd Movement perfect music to relax to with a glass of wine. His Brazilian pieces are also quite good. A breeze though the catalogues of Milhaud, Martinu, Poulenc definitely indicates that there's a ton of good stuff there to draw off of. A lot of their works are slightly jazzy, but feature a lot more melodic strength, which will definitely endear people to you more than a bunch of noodling.

Dave Brubeck stuff (Blue Rondo a la Turk, Take Five etc.) always goes down well, more modern Ludovico Einaudi type stuff could be good, Ancora might be a specifically good one.

play popular pieces. people don't care about classical pieces and they will find it boring. they really want to hear new, fresh music so play pop music. and don't forget to enjoy and feel when you play.

Hehe, I asked my niece what kind of CD she wanted for Christmas. You could have knocked me over with a feather when she said "classical." But then she added, "you know, like Yanni"...

I heard a rumour that yanni records his parts in advance and mimes for live acts, I think there was a moment on one of his dvds where his keyboard was off or something and he was still playing (complete with overtheatrical performance).

We could ask Linda Evans: maybe he also phones it in... well, never mind...
