I'm about to start learning Mozart K332, sonata in F major.

In the second movement, the edition I'm using has an ornamented version and a non-ornamented version. The editorial lists that the non-ornamented is from the autograph and the ornamented from the first published edition.

Any opinions on which it's 'better' to learn - either or both? I'm leaning towards the ornamented version for personal preference, but wondering if I ought to do the non-ornamented first and then add the complications.

Hi Elspeth,

It's really a personal choice, whichever you like.  I played the ornamented version, because I found it more varied and interesting.  (Hint:  after you've learned the first half of the movement, you've nearly learned the non-ornamented version of the second half.)

I believe the ornaments are Mozart's, but in any case, musicians ornamented passages on their own routinely in Mozart's day.

Have fun!

Well if the ornaments are on the first published addition then Mozart must have written them and approved it himself, so one can assume this was ultimately how he wanted it to be played and the version without ornaments was just a draft.

In any case it sounds better with the ornaments in my opinion.

Peter.
