Hi,
I'm a Chicago pianist, wondering if there is any interest
in workshops specifically for musical theater pianists:
 How to play for auditions,
 Rehearsals,
 Shows.

I've been guest artist at several universities, and have
not seen this on the curriculum.
  Viva la musique!

I've had the opportunity to play many musical theater productions - that's where I learned to vamp and improvise.  Auditions were quite interesting . . . to say the least.  I don't know if there are any workshops but it sure wouldn't be a bad idea.  Oftentimes pianists/accompanists go into these situations not knowing what to expect and can get blindsided - especially by the egos of those auditioning and the oftentimes uprepardeness of the autioneer.  Perhaps a separate discussion here would get the ball rolling.  I'd be more than happy to relate some of my experiences - good and bad - in order to help anyone interested in pursuing this avenue of work.  Just a thought.

I think accompanying is great experience for any pianist. Teaches you sight-reading, improvising (when the sight reading isn't working), people skills, and most importantly humility.
