Chasse Neige
« on: July 19, 2004, 07:06:55 PM »

Hey everyone, I'm practicing Liszt's "Chasse Neige" T.E. (no.12) and was wondering....do you physically hold the notes in the melody line when it is humanly possible, and hold it with the pedal when it's like a 13th away from the tremolo; or do you just use the pedal to hold the melody all the time?

I am sure Liszt could hold notes really far apart because he had those really long fingers, but it is possible to play it well with sensitive pedaling.  It's like in "Au lac de Wallenstadt" from the first year of pilgrimage.  The left hand fingering given by Liszt is SO bloody uncomfortable because of the hideous stretch between the 4th and 5th fingers, but there is alternate fingering.  For Chasse Neige, use the pedal..

Thanks, I think now I can actually drive this "snow plow" (Is it just me, or does the title "Tempête de Neige" [snow storm] sound more fitting? hmm). I know what you mean about Liszt's weird fingerings too....but supposedly he could only reach a tenth...although by his finger notations I think he could really go a bit further.  :-/
