probably one of the two I wrote when I was 8-10 years old and thought you could write a concerto out of two themes and then just do scales and chromatics for the remaining part of the concert  Wink

Jokes aside, I'd say some of Bachs concertos aren't technically demanding. They might be difficult in other ways, though. Check out his f-minor concerto, it's really beautiful and not so difficult. It's god a very famous Largo movement.

By the way, it's very refreshing to see a "what's the easiest..." kind of thread, among all of these "what's the most badass piece" threads  Grin

I'm not sure if it's the "easiest", but the Haydn D major is considered one of the easier concertos.

some of Mozart's earlier concertos are easy, because he wrote them when he was very young.

It would be difficult to say what is the easiest concerto. Bach is difficult for the mind and to stay with the orchestra, Mozart is difficult because it is very exposed and the slightest mistake is noticeable, and most other concertos are just technically difficult. So I suppose you would have to categorize it according to the composer or music period.

From my own experiences, I would say Mendelssohn's G minor and Gershwin's Rhapsody.  The Schumann isn't bad, either.

Mozart Piano Concerto no.20 in Dminor K.466. It's not that hard. Grieg Aminor one is also quite managable. Also Beethoven 3rd. I learnt Mozart and Beethoven both in one month.

The Grieg concerto for some reason is plagued with memory traps.

Yeah, Grieg is a bit trickier than others.

Beethoven 3 is not easy... I find it is very easy to "slip" in it.  Schumann?  the third movement is no cakewalk.  I don't think any "standard" concerto can be considered easy.  But if I have to make a pick, I would go for an early Mozart concerto.

But thinking about it, once you have the technique required, Tchaikovsky 1 is much more confortable than most Mozart...

Don't know about Tchaikovsky but Beethoven 3rd was easy for me compared to other concertos.

Didn't he write all his music when he was very young? Tongue

Once again, if you're looking for the "easiest" concerto, then look at the Haydn or one of the easier Mozart concertos (K. 414 is not too bad.) ALL the other concertos mentioned - the Mendelssohn, the Grieg, the Schumann, any of the Beethoven, the Tchaikovsky (what are people thinking!!!!!!!??) - are SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult.

The Grieg is, by no means, easy. It is *probably* the easiest of the Romantic concerti, but I am not sure. However, my first concerto was the Grieg, which I was able to learn at 13.

I would recommend an early Mozart concerto. Maybe the first one. His first few concerti are among the easiest around.

The Haydn is nice as well.

Shostakovich 1 is not easy.  #2 is not hard.

Anyhow, looking for the easiest piano concerto is weird.  Piano concertos are usually big time show-off pieces.

From what I have heard here are the most popular concertos for young students:
Grieg, Schumann, Beethoven 3, Mendelssohn (g minor), some Kabalevsky, Shostakovich 2, Saint-Saens 2.  They all sound harder than they are...

Well, I know Grieg and Beethoven. Grieg is not hard if you are good with big chords and have fairly big hands. Beethoven needs stamina and requiers lots of emotions.

Mozart's Coronation Concerto K. 537 in D isn't too hard, I don't think. [Or maybe this just shows my musical ignorance, that I can't spot its difficulties.]

and mendelssohn is way easier than grieg.

also, the coronation (mozart) isn't easy at all - better try the camera concerti (413, 414, 415) or c dur 246.

well I will have to say the Henselt F Minor or the Schwarenka No 4. No just kidding The Dvorak Concerto is not too bad nor is the Beethoven 1st or 2nd. The third fourth and fifth on the other hand imho are on a much larger scale.

My god... How can anyone say that Grieg's concerto is easy?? also the Mendelssohn and Beethoven are very hard! I agree that Mozart's early concertos are not that hard. Anyhow, there's nothing like an EASY piano concerto, they are all hard... (:

I am not sure what do you mean by "easiest concerto" and what level you are referring to, but two easiest Concerti are Berkowitch Piano Concerto (appr. second grade) and Kabalevsky Concerto No.3 (may be fifth or sixth grades).

For myself and most of the other kids I see at the music festival, the first piano concerto we play is the Miniature Concerto by Rowley. It's not really considered a concerto in that I have never seen or heard anyone play it with an orchestra, but it was written for younger students and doesn't require maturity.

i agree that mendel.'s Gm is easier than it sounds, but still fun to play.  I have never found Mozart to be "easy."  Sure, you get all the notes, but the articulation kills me.  I played Mozart better as a kid than I do now, which never ceases to frustrate me.

I don't know about easy, but someone said something about prokofiev... all things aside, I find Prokofiev 3 to be pretty tricky.
