Tool's
Lateralus
, the album not the song. It's haunting and very original... I'm surprised I couldn't get into their stuff before.

I find them a bit boring. I've only heard some of Ænima though.
some time later... Giving them another go with that album.

Eh, can't say I enjoy Ænima that much, for the same reason as you. I tried listening to it again today and it was OK, but it didn't particularly catch my interest. However, listening to Lateralus in a dark room with a good pair of headphones is an experience. I'd highly recommend giving that album a listen.
I think I'll end my night with some Alkan.

Damn, if only I still had my good headphones. Have you (or anyone else) noticed that some music sounds slightly slower through headphones than with speakers. I mostly notice it with electronic music. Maybe it's because you can listen to the detail more closely (literally) with headphones...
Now listening: Venetian Snares:

Nice. Is it the Henck recording, or the synthesised one? I can't make my mind up which is the lesser of two evils, with Henck leaving out most of the notes in the second half.. and the synth version just... having an awful piano sound.
I believe I will listen to "La Villa Strangiato" by Rush.

Henck! I love his recording, despite its shortcomings. The synth version is stale and boring and ewww.
Someone else needs to record it and do it justice, though.

I think it should probably be played by a piano duo, despite this apparently going against the composers intentions, but the complex rhythms might pose a problem. It's actually physically impossible for one pianist to play all the notes so... idk, maybe if someone makes a decent computer recording (not it).

I believe Cogluotobusisletmesi is for '2 or more hands' so I guess it wouldn't go against his intentions!
Anyway, now listening to Barlow's variations on Beethoven's last piano sonata. This is one of the most awesome pieces ever. Barlow totally rapes the second movement. It 'works' as a computerized Disklavier recording.

The sound of silence after the Progressive Nation concert last night... I'm still exhausted. It was truly incredible... it's unfortunate that not everyone can appreciate such great music.

Louis Andriessen

This composer amazes me everyday.
He amazes me, too, albeit not daily and certainly not in quite the same way as he appears to amaze you! (and had God intended Stravinsky to be a Dutchman he'd surely have ensured that he was born in Rotterdam) - but then that's only a personal view, no more, no less and, as someone whose name momentarily escapes me once said "it takes all sorts to foul up a world"!...
Best,
Alistair
