hy! i'd like to know more about this composer. only his piece which i know is islamey, which is so good. is it really hard, on paper it doesn't look very hard, but then i saw markings allegro agitato, presto furioso...  Grin i've never heard it, i know it just from sightreading.
did balakirev wrote any other piece. i mean, he probably did, but some fun piece for piano?
and, if somebody knows how many minutes it takes when is played in normal tempo.

This isn't a piano piece, but his tone poem Tamara (Thamara) is really good.

islamey may not seem hard. yes, but its very fast. not only that, you have alot of repeated notes/chords etc. very straining for the hands. i only someone who broke a string on his piano cuz of islamey. at least, i think it was the islamey...

Me? A Piano-monkey? I'm not good enough to be one. - Dazzer's thoughts on piano monkeys.
The last recording i did was Etude in A Flat. It would have sounded better in A Hall though.

I used to play his transcription on Glinka's The Lark. That is really lovely. Also, his transcription of the slow movement from Chopin's 1st Piano Concerto needs a revival.
Two Piano concerto's have been recorded but they did not move me.

Mily Balakirev in my opinion is one of the Best but least known composers, at least around here anywayz.  If you are interested in hearing some of his piano works go to

http://www.classicalarchives.com/live/b.html

There are quite a few recordings here I don't know where to find the sheet music though.

hope this helps.

completely agree
i like balakirev so much
esp.his transcription of the lark and Chopin Romance
and of course his islamey (very difficult) itsnt hard to read a note and play but its difficult to play at speed the whole piece i failed to learn that i cant bring it up to speed i can only about 132 til 144 not 168

I love his transcription of The Lark of Glinka. I also love his Nocturne No.3.

Some History about the man:

"Balakirev is perhaps most important as the leader of The Mighty Five. (Balakirev, along with Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, and Cui, formed an alliance of amateur composers that came to be known as The Mighty Five.)"

He didn't wrote al lot of pieces, because he took I believe 20 years to write his symphonies. He was the first Russian Composer who was making a symphony, but when it was complete other Russian composers already made symphonies. If he was a little faster, maybe he was known today as very famous...
