So, what's the big deal?

You have to understand that the left hand must move in big, gestural gulps.  Pay attention to Chopin's accent marks on beats.  They help you anchor the patterns.

Obviously, you must practice slowly until everything is solidly memorized.  After that, your only enemy is tension.  Your left hand must be totally fluid and a slow practice tempo will get you there.  After that, you have to forget the individual notes and just feel the gestures.  Up-sweeping.  Down-sweeping.  Not "note-y."

This etude takes a lifetime to get under control.  Fasten your seatbelt.  It's a bumpy ride.  But worth it.

Get the Godowsky left-hand transcription of that study. Spend a week or two studying it. When you come back to the Chopin you'll be so relieved you'll nail it in three days.
