I need these recordings..
on: May 30, 2004, 09:01:05 PM
Hi, I just ordered some sheet music from Amazon.  I ordered

"Le Festin de Esope and other works for solo piano"
by Alkan

and

"Complete Piano Transcriptions from Wagner's Operas"
by Liszt
--------------------------------------
I dont have recordings for any of Liszt's transcriptions of Wagner's operas.  Here is the table of contents:

--------------------------------------
"Fantasy on Themes from Rienzi [Phantasiestück über Motive aus "Rienzi" ("Santo spirito cavaliere")]"

"Fantasy on Themes from Rienzi [Phantasiestück über Motive aus "Rienzi" ("Santo spirito cavaliere")]"

"Spinning Chorus from The Flying Dutchman [Spinnerlied aus "Der Fliegende Holländer"]"

"Ballad from The Flying Dutchman [Ballade aus "Der Fliegende Holländer": Transcription]"

"Overture to Tannhäuser [Overtüre zu "Tannhäuser": Konzertparaphrase]"

"Pilgrims' Chorus from Tannhäuser [Pilgerchor aus der Oper "Tannhäuser: Paraphrase]"

"Recitative and Romance "Evening Star" from Tannhäuser ["O, due mein holder Abendstern": Rezitativ und Romanze aus der Oper "Tannhäuser"]"

"Two Pieces from Tannhäuser and Lohengrin [Zwei Stücke aus "Tannhäuser" und "Lohengrin"]"

"ENTRY OF THE GUESTS FROM "TANNHÄUSER" [Einzug der Gäste auf der Wartburg]"

"ELSA'S BRIDAL PROCESSION FROM "LOHENGRIN" [Elsas Brautzug zum Münster]"

"From lohengrin [Aus "Lohengrin"]" I. FESTIVAL AND BRIDAL SONG [Festspiel und Brautlied] II. ELSA'S DREAM [Elsas Traum]

LOHENGRIN'S ADMONITION [Lohengrin's Verweis an Elsa] "Isolde's Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde [Isolden's Liebestod: Schluß-Szene aus "Tristan und Isolde"]"
"Am stillen Herd" from Die Meistersinger [Am stillen Herd: Lied aus "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg": Transcription]"

"Valhalla from Der ring des Nibelungen {Wallhall aus "Der Ring des Nibelungen": Transcription]"

"Solemn March to the Holy Grail from Parsifal [Feierlicher Marsch zum heilgen Graal aus "Parsifal "
----------------------------------
and here is the description from the Alkan book:
-------------------------------
Selected and with Introductory Notes by Marc-André Hamelin. This unprecedented collection rescues extraordinary, challenging piano works from undeserved obscurity: Alkan's Etudes in Minor Keys, Op. 39 (the complete Symphony for Solo Piano, Op. 39, Nos. 4-7; the complete Concerto for Solo Piano, Op. 39, Nos. 8-10; and "Le Festin d'Ésope" [Aesop's Feast], Op. 39, No. 12); Saltarelle, Op. 23; Barcarolle, Op. 65, No. 6; and Toccatina, Op. 75. Introduction. Notes.
-----------------------------------------------

Please let me know if you know a place where I can download recordings of these pieces (no MIDIs please..) normally, I would burn CDs from the local library, but they dont have anything

The only recordings I have are Alkan: Symphony for solo piano
and
Le Festin de Esope.
ANY help getting other works would be greatly appreciated..
thanks,
donjuan

You should definately go to naxos.com, on this site you can't actually download the cds that they have but you can listen to their entire cd collection over the internet using windows media player for free! (to do this you would need to register but this is free as well!). Naxos are very good and they will probably have a lot of the pieces that you are looking for. :)

Yeah, that IS a great site, but I was REALLY hoping for a place where I can download music into files for burning.

Another thought, you could try classicalmusicarchives.com they have loads of stuff, but I don't know for sure whether it's downloadable or not!

Hope this is helpful, JK. :)

I have been looking for a while for Liszt's transcriptions of Wagner (and other) operas. The stuff that is freely downloadable "sucks", as you put it. Those pieces are way too difficult for you to find a good free recording. It is hard enough to find commercial recordings, and even those "suck" sometimes (compare Craig Sheppard's version of the Tannhaeuser Overture with Jorge Bolet's - Bolet's rocks, and it wasn't even a planned recording!). The best source is Leslie Howard's monster work, but it is expensive. I'm afraid, you'll have to shed some money if you can't find someone who will lend you their CDs.
