- Did you know that some people pay a lot of money for a meat pie?

The meat pie served at the Fence Gate Inn near Lancashire, Britain, is an attempt to show us just how classy a pile of nondescript meat and mushrooms can be. The Pie ie stuffed with nearly six pounds of Wagyu , this is bolstered by rare Japanese matsutake mushrooms, which cost US$910 per pound. The recipe also calls for truffles, fresh herbs and two bottles of 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild valued at US$8,500. Adding that wine to meat pie is the culinary equivalent of melting down your Olympic gold medals so you can bedazzle your cell phone.

Most pies are served with a golden brown crust. However this pie sprinkles the top with edible gold leaf.

The cost for the whole affair comes to US$16,169.50, making your slice a mere US$2,021.19. Cheese is 50 cents extra!!

Kevin Berkins, who owns the Fence Gate Inn near Burnley, Lancashire, where the pie was created, said you could really taste the difference.

"It started as a bit of silliness and quickly got out of control," he said.

"It's a very sophisticated pie. It's like anything else, if you drive a Rolls-Royce, you know you are driving something prestigious."

"Not everyone's going to order it but it's good for a special occasion if someone wants to be part of a real eating experience."

- Did you know that the worlds most dangerous cheese is Casu Marzu?

Casu Marzu begins as Pecorino Sardo (Fiore Sardo), a cheese that’s typically soaked in brine, smoked, and left to ripen in the cheese cellars of central Sardinia. But to produce Casu Marzu, cheese makers set the Pecorino Sardo outside in the open – uncovered – and allow cheese flies (scientifically named Piophila casei) to lay eggs inside of it.

As the eggs hatch into a myriad of white transparent maggots, they feed on the cheese. By doing so, they produce enzymes that promote fermentation and cause fats within the Casu Marzu to decompose.

Some people wear eye protection when eating Casu Marzu: the maggots are known to jump as high as six inches and straight toward the eyeballs with exact precision. At a minimum, make a maggot sandwich and shield your eyes with your hand as you take a bite.  :-X

- Did you know Australian scientists have found a very exciting tool for the fight against cancer? Nano technology provides hope for cancer treatment. I saw on Australian news last night that there is a dog undergoing treatment with this therapy.

https://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2009/s2610923.htm

HIMANSHU BRAHMBHATT: The first wave of Trojan horse goes in there and disables the resistance mechanisms inside the cancer cell. Now interestingly, these cancer cells are totally receptive to repeated waves of these Trojan horses. So we can send in these nano cells again and again and each time we can load them up with different types of armaments against cancer.

ASHLEY HALL: Is it effective in all cancers?

HIMANSHU BRAHMBHATT: It is well known that these resistance mechanisms are found in virtually all the different types of cancer cells and so essentially the concept of going in in multiple waves and treating cancer at its own game can work in virtually all cancers.

ASHLEY HALL: The reaction to the research has been broadly positive but one leading cancer researcher at Johns Hopkins University points out that fewer than one per cent of promising new treatments actually delivers for patients.

Whether this is one of them will be clear after human trials, which start in a few weeks' time.

While researchers have been working on using nano-cells against cancer for at least five years, Brahmbhatt said the latest version had proved 100 percent effective treating cancers in mice which were resistant to conventional chemotherapy.

- Did you know that Durga Thangarajah is the only child in Australia (and possibly the world) to survive a full-term ovarian pregnancy?

Ovarian pregnancies affect one in every 40,000 pregnancies and are a life-threatening complication. Ovarian pregnancies are the rarest form of ectopic pregnancies and occur when the egg fails to travel down the fallopian tube and into the uterus.

I wonder if it comes with a razor blade for the little children to use as well?

- Did you know that the worlds first crossword was created by Arthur Wynne who had the job of devising the weekly puzzle page for Fun, the eight-page comic section of the New York World. When he devised what he called a Word-cross for the Christmas 1913 edition, published on 21 December he could have no idea that he would be starting a worldwide craze.

Probably folding the paper or something like that.

I imagine you just draw the edges of the circle real thick so that the dot is the portion you do not actually draw.

You draw the circle, then fold the paper over some of the circle so you can draw on the back of the paper to get into the middle of the circle then you have your dot. :) Google will reveal it to you if you type: draw circle with dot in centre.

- Did you know there are headphones that can cancel out background noise? My dad bought a pair the other day and I tried them out. When you put them on you can still hear everyone around you and background sound, but when you press the noise cancellation button, it feels like ear plugs are shoved into your ears even though there is nothing there and it doesn't interfere with the sound of the music you are listening to! I could also resemble the sensation to how your inner ear feel when changing altitude in an airplane although there is actually no physical change inside your body.

I was really amazed at this technological step in headphones!

- Did you know that there is a girl who has baffled the medical world because she does not age?  Medical experts believe Brooke Greenberg suffers from some kind of genetic mutation that shapes the way she ages, leaving her with the perpetual appearance of a baby.

The exact cause of the phenomenon has not been pinpointed.

Brooke has been plagued by medical problems since she was born, at one point diagnosed with a brain tumour that doctors thought would be terminal. Her parents bought a casket in preparation, but new tests remarkably revealed there was no tumour.
