Which to choose?
on: February 02, 2011, 03:07:55 PM
I auditioned for both the birmingham conservatory and the Royal Northern College of Music and have been offered places for both schools... (Guaranteed conditional for RNCM because i sent a recording)

Does anyone here have any idea which school is better/would provide me a better music education (In terms of practical and theory lessons)? What are the courses like? How about their Principal Study Teachers (I'm majoring in Piano)?

How good is RNCM when compared to the other royal schools such as RCM, RAM, Royal Scottish and Royal Welsh?

My audition pieces were

Chopin Etude Op.10 No.1
Bach Prelude and fugue in C# Major (Bk 1) and
Bach-Busoni Chaconne in D Minor.

I was quite surprised (And glad!) to receive their offers , because i made some mistakes in the Busoni (I slipped in the fast scales - not together), and the ending (piu mosso) was a bit muddy.

Both are very good music schools with the Northern College being perhaps the slightly better one. Both cities have fine orchestras and good concert halls. I cannot tell you who teaches at these colleges but I do know that both have fine reputations so you should be happy with either.

Congratulations and happy studies.
