Remembering the great Maurizio Pollini
Legendary pianist Maurizio Pollini defined modern piano playing through a combination of virtuosity of the highest degree, a complete sense of musical purpose and commitment that works in complete control of the virtuosity. You think I'm "underestimating the scope of tonal and emotional pieces"???
What on earth does that mean? I don't intend to brag, merely to inform you that I ran a sizable college music library for many years. We had thousands of scores, recordings and books, much of which I eventually became at least somewhat familiar with over the years. I studied all sorts of music from pre-Renaissance to very modern. Piano music has always been my favorite, but working in the college music education program I certainly learned a very broad spectrum of music. So just to make this point clear, I don't really think I'm underestimating the scope of any general genre of classical music. But fortunately we agree that a well rounded knowledge of music is very important.  ;)

Again, an unexpected opinion. I've always liked the 5th. Prokofiev wrote 2 versions of this piece, op.38 and op.38/135, and honestly I've never attempted to compare the two. But it is a sort of breezy, lighthearted work, especially compared with the following "War Sonatas". Also I may especially like the 5th (and Visions fugitives) because I bought a Melodya LP back around 1972 that featured these 2 works, performed delightfully by a young Russian girl, and being my first exposure to Prokofiev's piano music, opened my ears to the rest of his music, most of which I really like.  ;)
Well as I said originally, I don't dislike the piece, it's just that it doesn't 'communicate' to me like all the other sonatas- or for that matter- Prokofiev's other piano music. I probably owe it to myself to give it another listen.

Surprised at the negative opinion of the Visions Fugitives, 'witty little vignettes' as one commentator called them.

Scriabin sonata 2,

YOU DON"T LIKE THE LISZT LEGENDS? OR VALSE OUBLIEES? OR TE 11??? OR THE DANTE SONATA? Well the Dante is a bit long... but still... the Legendes are some of my favorite Liszt pieces.

I don't care much for Liszt's Legendes, either, although I like the Dante Sonata a lot.  I just don't think that there have been any good performances of it; even Berman and Sofronitsky don't express all there is in that piece.

The Dante sonata is easily Liszt's most boring work ever. I nearly fell asleep once when listening to a Leslie Howard recording live. I had to pinch my self to stay awake to listen to the miserable recording. So boring indeed. The Liszt sonata is so much better!

Interesting.

I think the first 10 minutes or so is some of the best piano writing ever. After that it does drag on a fair bit, and depends on who's playing, can get boring.

Most of Chopin's waltzes, with the exception of op 18, op 64. And Chopin's Mazurka op 7 no 2.

Just of what I have played:

- Prokofjev visions fugitives op 22; little glimpses of great music but all seems not in connection with each other as well as having some real noisy ones along

- Carl Nielsen 5 pieces op 3. Just listen to it. That is all I have to say.

- Chopin Impromptu op 29 in Ab major; Have got neither the depth nor the brilliance of chopin other works. Beautiful middle section though, which is why I played it

Agree!

Also not a fan of Chopin's "Black Keys" etude. I just find it unpleasant to listen to.

Then try the Godowsky versions (of which there are far more than of any of Chopin's other études).

There's a lot.....
Liszt: Transcendental 9 & 11, Paganini Etude 1, Lots of the later works, the "Gypsier" Hungarian Rhapsodies (Like the opening of 13)
Chopin: (10) 5, 6, 9, & 10, (25) 4, 7. I think most of the little stuff like waltzes and mazurkas are stupid and the preludes are very hit and miss.
Rachmaninoff: First Symphony, About 1/3 of the preludes, about 1/4 of the Etudes-Tableaux,
Alkan: Just about anything he wrote in a major key. I cannot bring myself to enjoy 90% of his major writing.
Ravel: Bolero, and his weird classical/baroque style stuff
Beethoven: His classical style stuff. I love late Beethoven but he hadn't branched out enough at the beginning....

I have a hard time appreciating the Chopin's Fantasy in F minor ... I don't hate it, I just kind of ignore it. Also, I never understood Ravel's la Valse.

I try to like the Military Polonaise, but it's too much boldness and marching, not balanced by lyricism. The Heroic Polonaise is much better in this way ...

I get tired of Rachmaninoff's second concerto from time to time, but only because I've listed to it so much ...

And I have a very hard time appreciating Bach--any music by him. I guess the Prelude and Fugue in C minor is tolerable. But generally I always struggle to like Bach's music.
Practicing:
Bach Chromatic Fantasie and Fugue
Beethoven Sonata Op. 10 No. 1
Shostakovich Preludes Op. 34
Scriabin Etude Op. 2 No. 1
Liszt Fantasie and Fugue on BACH

Have you tried listening to Bach's non-keyboard works? I recommend the Brandenburg concertos, orchestral suites, and if you like vocal music, the cantatas.
