New Piano Market Statistics: Inside the Quiet Transformation of Piano Playing

For those of us who spend our lives on the bench — whether teaching, practicing for a recital, or simply playing for the love of it – the piano has always been a singular concept: wood, felt, strings, and soul. Yet, recent global market reports reveal that the definition of our instrument is expanding and evolving in ways that affect us all. Read more

In search of recordings.
on: October 19, 2004, 06:33:28 AM
I'm looking for recordings (solo piano) of the following pieces:

Night on Bald Mountain - Modeste Mussorgsky -- I'm pretty sure there is an arrangement for piano, I cant' find any recordings, though.

Toccata & Fugue in Dm - Bach -- I've got a version played on a Pipe Organ(obviously), but I'd like a  good recording for Piano as well.

Sheep May Safely Graze* - Bach

*Cantata No. 140 I believe

Hopefully you guys will have heard recordings for some of these =)

Thanks,

Michael.

I don't have recordings of any of these, sorry.  But "Night on Bald Mountain" (Also called "St. John's Night on the Bare Mountain") does have a piano version (edit because I confused it with another piece for aminute before I looked it up) :( Rimsky-Korsakov actually orchestrated the popularized version heard today.

Busoni did a transcription of the Tocatta and Fugue for piano

I'll see if I can find recordings of these

Hi Michael,
I have a recording of Bach/Busoni: Toccata and Fugue in Dm for the piano.  Let me know if you are interested.  If so, I am willing to give you the file over MSN messenger.

Just let me know.

Sketchee,

Thanks for all the info! I'll continue my search with these new facts. Thank you also for you willingness to help me find them.

Don Juan,

I would thrilled if you could send it =)  My MSN account is: [email protected]

I have a broadband connection so it shouldn't take a terribly long time, but I insist that you send at your leisure, I'm certainly in no rush and I truly appreciate the offer.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply (and help!) I very much appreciate it.

Just thought I'd update everyone as to the status of my search.

Toccata & Fugue in Dm - Found. Thanks to DonJuan =)

Sheep May Safely Graze - Found. It's on a CD - "Bach Transcribed"

St John's Night on Bare Mountain - Found. I found one recording of this, by a lady named Briggite Engerer. The problem? It appears to be available solely in France:

...Not sure how I'll get ahold of that. I don't particularly care to order out of country, or make a French Amazon account. But, atleast I know there is a recording out there.

This CD is available from

https://shop.castleclassics.co.uk/acatalog/Mussorgsky__Modest__Russian_1839_1881_.html

It's 8.69 pounds (incl. shipping to the US - I don't know if you live in the US)

There's a person at the classicalarchives.com who plays the piano version of Night on Bald Mountain. Speaking of which, does anybody have sheet music to it?

I don't have it, but I saw it on SheetMusicPlus.com, which is when I began looking for recordings of it. Haven't ordered the sheetmusic yet, though. I haven't yet found any free copies online.

Thanks for the tip on the recording, I'll have a look around.

Xvimbi,

Wicked! Thanks for the link =) It looks like a pretty reliable source. I do live in the US, by the way =)

There's a kick-ass version of Mussorsky's "Night on Bare Mountain" for piano by Boris Berezovsky available on Teldec.
