How brilliant! I love Katsaris! He is one of the great masters of our time, and clearly has quite the sense of humour!

I am surprised no one selected Sorabji. I found some of his arrangements quite entrancing.

I am surprised no one selected Sorabji. I found some of his arrangements quite entrancing.
Perhaps this was in part because his transcription work is such a small fraction of his output as a whole, consisting as it does of just the Trois Pastiches (Chopin, Bizet and Rimsky-Korsakov, 1922), Pasticcio Capriccioso (Chopin, 1933), two Bach transcriptions (1940 and 1945), two versions of Ravel's Rapsodie Espagnole (1923 and 1945) and, finally, the closing scene from Strauss's Salome (1947) - so nothing at all for the final 35 years of his creative career. The Ravel ones include some grave impracticalities (mainly in its last movement) although also contain attractive treatment of the material, the Pastiches are quite amusing and the Bach transcription all well worth attention, but the crown of the all is the Strauss, although it's an utter beast to play. It was premièred just a few years ago by the uniquely intrepid and supremely gifted Jonathan Powell, who has given several performance of it since. All of them have been edited/typeset and all have been performed.

Best,

Alistair

TBR, you should be VERY ashamed for not including Rachmaninoff or Hamelin.

I assumed I must have voted first time round, then found I hadn't. I still can't choose a actual favourite, though Liszt is the best overall.

...saint-saens(his Thais Paraphrase is just...)

!! good taste  ;D

Haha.  :) Nice one.

Have either of you ever encountered a cd recording of that Saint-Saens? It's work in progress for me, and I can't find any comparative listening.

Do contemporary arrangers count? If so it would be David Hicken or Jennifer Thomas
