I think 45WPM is about average so you're still above by quite a bit ^^

Well that'll probably make the average slightly lower than 45wpm which is even better lol

I only use the 2-3  fingers in each hand when I type...so no, I don't think piano playing has improved my speed at all ;D

Good point, because people my age (60 and over) were trained on mechanical typewriters that required a different technique, and endless drill of jujujujuju etc.  Most people younger have never seen one.  The mechanical ones required a forceful snap to get the key to fly up and hit the paper, and if you timed it wrong two (or many) keys would get stuck together.

I did a professional typing test for a job interview once.  It was funny.  Waaaaay faster than they were expecting.  For sure piano influenced, and then typing on forums like this.  Didn't get the job, but I was amused.

Haha.  I found my results.  73 and 84 wpm.  I think that was three rounds with an averaged out score.  I remember wondering what Bernhard would get.  He used Dvorak and created loooong posts on here.

High Proficiency
There are typists who extend far above and beyond the normal level of proficiency. According to "On the Reappraisal of Microeconomics" author Robert Ayers, a highly proficient typist can hit upwards of 120 WPM compared to the 20 to 30 WPM typing speed of a "key pecker." According to The Martin J. Whitman School of Management, Barbara Blackburn of Salem, Oregon holds the record as the fastest typist of all time. Blackburn could type at 150 WPM over a stretch of 50 minutes and peaked at bursts of 212 WPM.

I'm quite sure if people tried this record could easily be broken.

Okay, a bit of seriousness, and this may apply to piano.

Today's typing speeds are much faster, several times faster, than in the past.

This is attributed to two things, one mechanical and one behavioral.

Mechanically, the old typewriters we learned on needed a great deal of force.  You had to snap your fingers to get the key to fly up hard enough to press the ribbon on the paper.  You couldn't use a lot of arm weight.  The muscular force required slowed your speed, few typists realistically did better than about 40, which is silly slow on a computer.

Secondly, and this is thought to be the more important factor, typists learn faster BECAUSE they get instant feedback from the computer screen, and they develop a higher degree of skill.  Anybody who isn't typing 80 isn't trying, and most of us can do bursts at 120 or more.  It is the reinforcement schedule that improves the performance.

Just tried the first one on a low profile computer keyboard.  74 with a bit of a learning curve.

I'd like to point out my official scores were done on a clunky, old computer keyboard.  I remember why they picked that old thing to do typing tests on.  Keys likely to stick, pressing way down, that type of thing.

I work in IT during the day and so touch typing for me is a must. (Other wise I wouldn't have as much time to post my rubbish on here!!) I have found that playing the piano actually helped my touch typing, I find a lot of people that also work in IT either can't touch type, or struggle because they substitute that pinky finger for the 4th for the p,q,z,delete etc.

My pinky's are actually quite strong and so I touch type very well. I average around 120-135 on the speed test depending on if I concentrate. I also weirdly have good left hand dexterity in my fingers because in my younger days I gave up the piano I became quite the master at the computer game "Guitar Hero" that requires strength in the left hand.

The standard QWERTY keyboard layout for English / American I think has a ratio of around 60-40 of left hand key strokes to right hand.

That saying, I don't think touch typing faster has helped me play the piano any better and I think research has been one on this. It's different motions, different finger strengths I feel like even the  purpose of them both may seem similar they have a lot of underlying differences.

A little off topic but a similar idea -
For those that can drive a car and understand steering, gears and roads, then jump into an Arctic Lorry, just because it has gears steering and roads doesn't mean you'll have any idea what you're doing it's a whole different experience. In the UK there's separate licences for them both.

Honestly, if you have below 160 WPM on avg, you should feel really bad about yourself.
