Is anyone familiar with the 24 Preludes op. 81 by Stephen Heller?
-
I've never played one of these preludes (I'm still working on his etudes), but I've got a recording of them - played by Jean Martin. I could upload it if you are interested and don't have it yet...
-
Oh, yes please that would be wonderful!! :D
-
Heyho Sarahlein!
You can download the preludes here:
https://rapidshare.de/files/26165332/Heller-Preludesop81_150.rar
The file includes preludes op. 150, too (man, that Heller guy wrote a lot of preludes!). Unfortunately the files are only numbered, not named - 01-24 are op 81, the rest is op 150.
Have fun!!!

These are compressed files (like zip files). You need a program called WinRar to open them. It is available as shareware (it is free for a trial period of 40 days, then you have to buy it) here:
https://www.win-rar.com/download.html
Click on the download box, and then install it, and then use it to open the files. :D
Best wishes,
Bernhard.
-
Thanks freakofnature,
Just listen to both opuses. They are fantastic.
I've attached the sheetmusic for op. 81, if anybody needs it.
-
menancyandsam , thanks!! :D :D
Bernhard, I managed to open it in the end before I saw your post but thanks anyway!
-
Oh, seems I'm a bit late for helping out...
If you'd like to have a look at his Preludes for Mademoiselle Lily (or something like that, I'm at work right now and can't remember the exact title) - I've got the scores and a recording of them, too...
-
Sure! ;D

You can still use it after 40 days though, although each time you get a message with trial expired or something.

Sure! ;D
I thought so... ;) I will post it as soon as I'm home from work!

Here is the sheets to op. 82. They are all great pieces. I especially like op. 82 no. 11,13,15 & 17.
Any idea what grades these pieces may be?
-
Whoohooo, thanks for the scores to op 82!!!
-
Thank you to all for a most superlative (and utterly obscure) repertory. :D
-
Yes! Thank you sovery much!! :D :D
-
Thank you all for the Heller selections. I've become fascinated with his life and music. You all are great!
-
I really like the two Tarantellas op 85, but only have the score for the second. Does anyone have the first, too???
-
Over the past few days I've acquired additional Heller works. If anybody is interested in the following just let me know.

Lob der traenen

op. 34 Ballade sur les roi des aulnes de Schubert
op. 104 Polonaise
op. 125 24 Etudes -Despression et de rhythme
op. 16, no. 20 -Impromtu
op. 67 Vallee d amour
op. 77, no. 9 -Saltarello -Theme Mendelssohn
op. 78 Promenades D'un Soltaire
op. 80 Promenades D'un Soltaire
op. 9 Sonata
op. 138 Album for the Young
op. 45,46,47
op. 150
You also might be interested in a online book titled "Stephen Heller: His Life and Works", I believe written in 1876, twelve years b/4 his death. The author of the book, which by the way is a translation from French to English, discussed Heller's relationship w/ Schumann & other contemporary artisans. Critiques Heller's works (mostly in flattering terms with many comparisons to Chopin & Mendelssohn. It's a good read but you need to print it out (60 pages) & then reassemble it. I'll attach it here.
BTW a lot of these came from https://www.gamingforce.com/forums/concert-hall. The site is a bit confusing to maneuver around in, but to access Classical stuff you'll want to go to the "Concert Hall" forum & do your search in that forum.
There is also a member of this forum & the Gamming Force forum who is trying to locate all of his pieces & recordings and will post them once he is done.
Have fun.

Dear menancyandsam,
I'm missing the following scores and would be really thankful if you could upload them:
op 78
op 80
op 138
op 150
Thanks a lot in advance!
fon
PS: I've found the whole op 16 'The Art of Phrasing' on Gamingforce. If you don't have it already, I could upload it!

Yes, please! :D

Here you go. BTW if you come across any recordings of these pieces let me know.
Apparently I don't have op. 150, sorry. But I've included some "selected studies" no op. # here is the 1st 25 I'll send the other 25 later. If you ever find out what opus these studies are please let me know.
-
Here's the 2nd half of Heller's "50 Selected Studies"
-
@bernhard:
I've attached the studies op 16. In exchange you could teach me how to learn these damn wide jumps in the first part of Albeniz' Asturias. ;D
-
@menancyandsam:
THANX A LOT for these scores. They are great!
I simply write down which albums of Heller I have excluding the two that I've already posted:
- Late Piano Works (pianist: Meyer-Herrmann) with:
3 Staendchen op 131
7 Lieder ohne Worte (Songs without words) op 120
2 Tarantellas op 85
Variationen ueber 'Warum' von Schumann
Voyage autour de ma chambre op 140
- Piano Works (pianist: Pantillon)
Spaziergaenge eines Einsamen (Promenades d'un solitaire) op 78
Reveries du promeneur solitaire d'apres J.-J. Rousseau op 101
Dans les bois suite no 3 op 136
Dans les bois nouvelle series op 128
- Studies (Vermeulen)
Studies op 45, 46, 47
and a Sonatine op 147 played by Blumenthal.
Just tell which ones you want and I will upload them.
If someone knows of other recordings of Heller's works, please tell me. These are all that I could come across...
The selected studies are from different opera - I recognized some that I had already learned: No 15, 16 and 24 are from op 45, No 35 (a short Tarantella - great fun to play!) is from op 46! The first 14 or so are from op 47.
Best regards,
FoN

Wow!!! I would love all of these recordings posted. Although, I already have op. 45,46,47 I'm sure someone else would love to listen to them. I don't know of any additional recordings but when I find some I'll be sure to post.
Thanks.

I guess this thread contains all recordings of Heller's works that are available. :o

PS: I've attached the score to Tarantella op 85 No 2 - I love this piece!
-
Thank you so much for the recordings.
I have a slightly different version of op. 85 no. 2 (attached). Let me know what you think.
BTW what do you normally due with different version of the same piece, I was working on Dvorak's Humoreske & found 3 different versions (95% silmilar), differenceds were in pedalling, some left hand chords and a few notes on the right. I ended just sticking to one version.
I'ml also attach a four hand version of op. 85, no. 2.
Heller's great, anybody want to recommend any of his pieces around Grade 3/4.
-
thanks for all these recordings and scores. one complaint - please dont use rapidshare again. it has many problems, like for example, a 100 MB upload limit, a 1 hour waiting period, and a 1 download at a time rule. next time, use www.sendspace.com www.sharebigfile.com www.megaupload.com or www.yousendit.com . thanks again!
-
I have a premium account at rapidshare, that's why I use it to upload files. With premium, there is only a 100MB limit (which doesn't matter as you can split the files with rar, zip or hjsplit), but the speed is very good (1,2 MB/sec) and for the offered service it's very cheap! There are sites with much bigger problems - some delete files very fast (I believe sendspace does that) and megaupload is painfully slow...
Thanks very much for the other version of the Tarantella - it's the best scan quality I've seen up to now! I have the 4hd version, too - maybe I could play it with my teacher as soon as I've learned the 2hd version.
Yeah, differences in the scores are unfortunately quite common. For example Chopin 28/20: I've found 2 versions with a C Major in the 3rd bar and 3 versions with a c minor... Or Scarlatti sonatas contain a lot of these differences. If I find one I simply play the different versions and decide which sounds better to me and stick with it...
For some grade 3/4 pieces: Have a look at some of Heller's studies - they sound great and a lot of them are not that hard. Out of your selected studies you could try No 16 (orig. op 45/2) and No. 35 (orig. op 46/7 - Tarantella. Not easy to bring it up to the suggested speed, but sounds also great when played a little slower).

actually ive had some files on sendspace for a really long time now. i mean, like over a month, and they havent been downloaded since. sorry to complain or whatever, but that 1 hour waiting period is really annoying. well, aside from the upload problems, these heller recordings are really great.

I was gone over the weekend so what a surprise to see how this thread has developed!
Thank you so so much!!
I'm looking forward to downloading the rest of the files from rapidshare. I hope they don't disappear too quick!
-
I was wondering if anybody has the audio or sheet music (or both :P) of the Album for the Young op 138-25 pieces in all
and also of his Sonatina op 149
please!!??
-
Unfortunately not. I'm looking for some Heller on eBay every now and then, but it's hard to find something besides his studies... And if I'm not mistaken it's equally hard to find his works as new in Score Shops. Maybe there's a chance to find some of his not-so-well-known-scores at an... aeeehhhmmm... it would be 'Antiquariat' in german - don't know the english word - some place where you can buy old books and so on... :D
-
Thanks people for all the music and links!
Has anyone played the 4-hand Tarantelle? (I like to drive my teacher mad with the occasional duet .... ) It looks like fun!
-
Thanks freakofnature. I'll look into it.
