What are some of the competitions coming up? I can think of:
- The Busoni
- The Chopin
Which candidates do you think are promising in both competitions? For the Chopin, I think the younger crop- Tiffany Poon, Annie Zhou, etc. - are exceptional, and so are some of the pianists on the other side of the "age spectrum," e.g. Charles-Richard Hamelin.
For the Busoni: Cao Bolai is a GREAT, consistent, and hard-working pianist, and Kausikan Rajeshkumar plays incredibly cleanly, though some people may find his tone too brittle in quality...
-
I don't know any contestants, because all of them are new to me, but these are some more competitions coming up:
2015:
Hamamatsu Competition (I don't know if I spelled that right, though)
Leeds Competition
Telekom Beethoven Competition
2016:
Cleveland International Piano Competition
New Orleans Piano Competition
Queen Elisabeth Competition
-
2015:
Liszt Competition in Weimar
2016: Grieg Competition
-
Did you go to Italy and see the busoni up close and personal(and if you did then I hope you had a nice trip)or did you see videos of this year performances and where could I find these videos.

No; the competition actually doesn't start until the 26th I believe :P
I knew of Cao's playing and Rajeshkumar's playing from other competitions that I had followed on the Internet (the Ettlingen and the Chopin qualifier, respectively)
-
I'm think the preliminaries for the busoni passed and the semi final rounds are on 26th I could be wrong though and I've seen Rajeshkumar's playing and he has a good technique and tone.
Also I think we should get the Leeds competition into this discussion the Liszt competition winner Vitaly Pisarenko is gonna compete at Leeds and I think it will be interesting to see if he still has the skill to win and so is the 2014 Busoni 2nd place winner(first place wasn't awarded) Rhodolfo leone but I don't think leone will even place.
-
The 13th UNISA International Competition in January/February 2016.
This time they are combining Jazz and Classical.
The National competition was similar. Since I enjoy both, it was interesting and enjoyable to hear them mixed.
It required a few mindshifts though!
I am looking forward to the International one. Jazz piano is certainly entertaining and can be very interesting too. Previous competitions had some really excellent pianists.
-
There's also the Long Thibaud Crespin in Paris, end of October, one of the top 5 competitions:

Hmm depends on how you define "preliminary" and "semi-finals."
I would say the huge, sweeping "elimination" (or "qualifier" to use sports terms :P) of the Busoni passed already (last year), and the 26th is going to be the "first round" with 30 competitors.

Also, from a different aspect: junior competitions! :) (You[Schumaniac} probably already know all of these, and you may be planning to compete in them!)
2016: Gina Bachuaer Junior/Young Artist Competition
Cooper Piano Competition
San Jose Piano Competition (which is held every year anyway lol)

Yes I saw the San jose international competition and saw the first place winner for the 15-18 division Misha Galant and he was by far my favorite

Is it just me or is the livestream of the Busoni competition a pitch/several pitches lower than it should be?

The results of the Busoni (I think, it may be the opposite way around [I got this from the Italian livestream, but I don't speak Italian ;D)
1st Ji-yeong Mun
2nd Alberto Ferro
3rd Roman Lopatyinsky
4th Minsoo Hong (again ;D)
5th Bolai Cao
6th Leonardo Colafelice
They announced some other prizes, but I can't understand them 'cuz they were speaking Italian ;D
-
"WHAT"S HAPPEING WITH COMPETITIONS THESE DAYS? Ji-yeong Mun's playing is.. is.. PLAIN, BLAND< and LIFELESS."
-my ex at the conservatory ;D I kinda agree ;) I mean, I couldn't play that well, but there sure were competitors far better than her. I was listening live to her Round 1 live the other day, and I was like, "she'll definitely be written off". I was TERRIBLY wrong. But I guess people have different tastes, cause she won the Geneva Concours as well.
OK, so yeah Kyle ;D, you were right, Minsoo Hong got 4th, AGAIN ;D
Facebook followers of the Competition said that the true winner was Alberto Ferro, with his stunning Bartok concerto. Some said that Roman should've won. I find it ASTOUNDING that Colafelice only won 6th. To me, he and Alexander Gadgiev had some of the most un-plain performances in the whole competition!
-
Also, from a different aspect: junior competitions! :) (You[Schumaniac} probably already know all of these, and you may be planning to compete in them!)
2016: Gina Bachuaer Junior/Young Artist Competition
Cooper Piano Competition
San Jose Piano Competition (which is held every year anyway lol)
Lol haven't been active on this forum actually.
I've COMPETED in the San Jose! For the sake of privacy I'm not gonna say what year or prize :p
And yes I do know these competitions and Cooper is one of my goals ;D
-

Oh, I went to the Cooper Piano Festival this year :) It was an eye-opening experience. :)
Hmm.. you must have went to San Jose recently, because your a (pre?)teen pianist ;)
I'm planning to go to Cooper next year, but I probably am not good enough to even get in >:( Good luck to you, though!
-
Damn George li droped out of the chopin competition that's sad he would of at least made it to the second round. :'(

HEEJAE KIM- Beethoven Concerto 4
YUN WEI- Rach 3
DREW PETERSEN- Rach 1
VITALY PISARENKO- Rach 3
ANNA TCYBULEVA- Brahms 2
Not even half of the finalists (or whoever chose the concerti for them) have "good taste". Well, that's not what I think, but I'm sure TONS of people here will agree.
-
The 3 Honens Finalists:
Luca Buratto ITALY Age 22
Henry Kramer UNITED STATES Age 28

there are Brahms jokes?
anyway, I haven't paid much attention to the Leeds. The Leeds did bring out great piano players e.g. Perahia, Uchida, Schiff (as controversial as he may be)... But as for the Leeds winners after the 2000s or so, "where are they now??"
I. e. Clara Schumann jokes
Welcome Back! I got kypiano KICKED OUT!!!!
-
Oh, did you know Brahms was not such a heavy man when he wrote his Paganni Variations? He was in his late 20s/early 30s. You can basically tell his growth rate by looking at his music.
Op. 35 Very clean music
Op. 79 Less clean
Op. 117-119 VERY HEAVY MUSIC

I've said... he seemed chill... what happened?

The next live broadcast of the Chopin Competition is at 4:50 PM.
-
Olof Hansen is AMAZING
-
Olof Hansen is AMAZING
I missed him... I need to watch him now.
-
Olaf Hansen and Chi Ho Han were my favorites. Han played a virtually note perfect round. You don't see that often. Ivett Gyongyosi was the most beautiful contestant haha.

Haha we sure did..
-
Hmmm. I thought that Chi Ho Han and Olof Hansen were pretty beautiful, too :-*
Oh, and we musnt forgot Julian ;D
-
It's weird how being female can make you sound so good
I mean, if you listen to that Julian person's 2010 Competition (when he was still a man), its so much worse than the 2015 Competition (when he turned himself into a woman).
Also, I don't think ANYONE is as good as Yeoul Eum Son on the Mozart 21st- simply becahse she has that charm that you males don't have ;D
-
(when he turned himself into a woman).
Oh my GOODNESS do not even talk about that.
-

lol That was so wierd

lets just appreciate how awesome the chopin competition is

AJ, is there a reason you did not care for Julian?
-
Great playing for sure! It just didn't really stick out to me, its all subjective of course! Julian is a wonderful pianist with a lot to offer.
- AJ
-
I only started watching the competition today! What's happened?
First thoughts:
- go Cho! go Eric Lu!
- Luigi Carrocia is a bit of a wild card, but he could pass...
- the Russian sisters (forgot their name) are "nice" but paled in comparison to everyone else
by the way, @AJ and @dogperson I found both Chi Ho Han and Julian to be very "cold" and therefore not particularly appealing... :/
-
By the way, maybe we could discuss the Chopin at the other forum topic dedicated to it (by outin)... this is a much more general topic. -OP

-
Oh, and another upcoming competition:
IX Tchakovsky COmpetition for Young Musicians
Haochen ZHang won once, and Yeoul Eum SOn won 2nd one year.
-
AJ, is there a reason you did not care for Julian?
That posts looks like it was intended to open a new can of worms. Good thing AJ closed it. ;D

No, the question about Julian was not intended to open up a can of worms, that's why it was directed at A.J., whom I knew would keep the response to the music, rather than to those on the forum that would take the straight-forward question in a whole different, immature, direction. . I found Julian's performance personally inspiring, and was curious.
-

Yes, and uncalled for... But, I have to say, the discussion would most definitely be about his hair if it weren't specifically directed at AJ...

Who was your favorite performer of today? Mine were Eric Lu and Kate Liu.
-
Who was your favorite performer of today? Mine were Eric Lu and Kate Liu.
Yeah definitely Eric Lu. He's my favorite performer so far. I could hardly believe the coda on that ballade!
-
Yeah he's amazing, his playing reminds me a bit of Zimerman, but more delicate. He'll go to the next round for sure.
-
I didn't hear Session 1, but for Session 2, my votes go for everyone I actually listened to (Qi Kong, the Marek, the Eric Lu, and the Lucas)
BTW, who are the most attractive competitors?
Mine so far are:
the Witch Lady; Chi Ho Han; Olof Hansen
Out of all the people I actually listened to.
-
Ivett Gyongyosi by far. Rachel Kudo is beautiful too.

Yes, shes the witch lady. Rumor has it though, that she's average in Hungary ;D
-
OMG the Sendai is coming yp in 2016.
That competition requires you to play a whole opus of CHopin Etudes for the Preliminary Round ???
-
Rumor has it though, that she's average in Hungary ;D
Yeah there's no way lol

Thai peps are known for their beauty

I don't know why everyone loves her so much. She's a great pianist for sure, but I don't see what's different from her and the other pianists in the competition.
-

Yeah, she's very good, but there are many pianists I like better, such as Eric Lu, George Li, and Charles Richard Hamelin, to name a few.

Hahahahahaha.

But Seong-jin Cho didn't improve nearly as much.
Seong-jin Cho was WAY too good at age 14, he didn't have much room for improvement. George Li, on the other hand... he was just a j*ke
-
my favorites so far are (in order) eric lu, julian jia/kate liu, rachel kudo/chi ho han/qi kong. hoping i can be part of this competition in 2020 haha

I heard you play the Ballade 4 live and it was really inspiring. Good luck in 2020!
-
BTW, the Ballade 4 is really getting ahead! Pretty soon there will be someone who plays it better than Zimmerman!!!
Here are the Ballade 4 performances uploaded so far:

Which are your favorites?
-
@rubinsteinmad: thanks :)) jc when did u hear me play it live?
-
Hey David, both AJ Long and I are going to try to make it in 2020, maybe we could have a club or something like that. Any other piano street members preparing for 2020?

I agree with most everyone here by the way: Eric Lu & Kate Liu were amazing by far. Excited for Hamelin as well...!

If u refuse to appreciate the genius of Hansen, fine. He is like another Pogorelich. Except, Hansen's eccentricities help the music, while Pogorelich's destroy the music.
-

Somewhere under the rainbow, before Dorothy gets picked up by the cyclone.
-
Hansen is right up my alley for sure. I love pianists like him. Reminds me of Cortot, who you all know I virtually worship haha.
-

It's unhealthy to worship Cortot. Hehe lelele
But just LOOK at his hands near 0:40! They're HUGE! An octave for him is like a fifth for many people! :-[
This performance is AMAZING, by the way.
-
OMG the Belle of the Hall is amazing too! No one else I've heard makes as much sense as her for this piece! However, this is the first performance at this competition that I heard, so maybe someone else may be better/ But still, playing this Etude like Ivett is no small feat.
-
Here is Julian playing in the 2010 Competition and in the 2015 COmpetition.
I like how in the 2010 Competition, starting from 0:14, he brings up something which makes it sound like he has 3 hands! He didn't do that in the 2015 Competition, though.
In the 2015 Competition, however, it was MUCH more graceful and the technique was flawless. It was much less turbulent.
-
Ivett's performance of the etude is marvelous (and she's gorgeous so she gets extra points from me haha) But no one plays it like Eric Lu =3h29m50s

OK, let's see.... You are NOT going to do Sonata #2 ;)
Correct! Here's mine...
I: Barcarolle, Etude 10/10, Etude 25/5, Nocturne 62/1
II: Ballade 1, Waltz 34/3, Polonaises Op. 26, Nocturne 72/2, 3 Nouvelle Etudes
III: 24 Preludes, Mazurkas Op. 50, Nocturne 15/2
Final (yeah right): F minor
Not sure about stage 2 but I feel that 34/3, 72/2, and the nouvelles need some love.
-
Awesome rep Noah! The nocturne is 72 1, not 2 ;). Looking forward to seeing you there in five years and having you kick my butt!
-
Not sure about stage 2 but I feel that 34/3, 72/2, and the nouvelles need some love.
OMG My (not-b!tch [I. e. 1st]) teacher gave me that nocturne. I was like "No!! It's not pretty!". Now, I'm older, and I can finally appreciate its beauty.
-
kick my butt
The last thing we need is someone visualizing it
-
Correct! Here's mine...
I: Barcarolle, Etude 10/10, Etude 25/5, Nocturne 62/1
II: Ballade 1, Waltz 34/3, Polonaises Op. 26, Nocturne 72/2, 3 Nouvelle Etudes
III: 24 Preludes, Mazurkas Op. 50, Nocturne 15/2
Final (yeah right): F minor
Not sure about stage 2 but I feel that 34/3, 72/2, and the nouvelles need some love.
OMG Etude 25/5! AWESOME WICKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ballade 1! AWESOME WICKED!!!!!
THE PRELUDES!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME WICKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chopin's 2nd!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME WICKED OMG THAT 2nd MOVEMENT IS BEAST!!!!!! (And so is part of the 1st movement).
-
So nobody is gonna do the 4 Ballades? I mean, if you speed up your Sonata and your Mazurkas in Stage III, you might be able to fit all of them in there ;D
(just so you know, it takes 30-40 minutes to play the complete Ballades)
-
I think the 1st Sonata is underappreciated. Especially the slow movement and the finale.

I'd rather be more diverse in my programming than doing all the ballades. I might do 4 in 3rd round, if i get there of course ;)

I know, 4 Ballades in a row is a bit boring and overwhelming. But it would be a HUGE project, and you might get extra points if you are able to make it interesting.
-
The program I'm going to run with/prepare is
Round 1: Ballade 1, Nocturne Op.27 No.2, Etude Op.10 No.8, Etude Op.10 No.11
Round 2: Scherzo 4, Waltz Op.42, Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise Op.22, Mazurka Op.67 No.4, Mazurka Op.68 No.4
Round 3: Piano Sonata No.3, Mazurkas Op.59, Nocturne Op.62 No.1, Impromptu Op.29
Finals: Concerto 2
Whenever I see "Op. 29", I think of Lowell Liebermann, or I think of the Gargoyles. WHAT IS WRONG WITH SOCEITY
-
Awesome rep Noah! The nocturne is 72 1, not 2 ;). Looking forward to seeing you there in five years and having you kick my butt!
Sorry, yeah I meant 72/1, and I might change that seeing as I would be playing 3 nocturnes, but I don't really need to worry about that, do I? :D Nah, I'll just buy my ticket to watch AJ play the f minor concerto. ;D

Dude we'll have to go to all the best cafe's in warsaw and do a bunch of fun stuff together if we go!

Oh that's so difficult. NOT! Compared to my pre calc anyway.

If u refuse to appreciate the genius of Hansen, fine. He is like another Pogorelich. Except, Hansen's eccentricities help the music, while Pogorelich's destroy the music.
Uh, I would disagree... Pogorelich was great before 2000 (haven't we been over this??). And as for Hansen, quoting my long-ass comment on his qualifier performance
I don't know what to make of his playing. It's certainly good- he has really good command of his technique and musical ideas (both of which set him apart from many of the other competitors). But his ideas come off as somewhat eccentric. They are "interesting" - dynamic changes, inner voices, etc.- but after a while the "interesting" seems to become an end to itself or over-the-top (beginning of Ballade 4- !!). Whether or not he gets in depends on what the judges think of such playing- perhaps they prefer more "conventional" performances...
In my opinion, the beginning of his Ballade 4 was waaaay overwrought. He chooses to "swell" passionately and accelerate the tempo. This seems like a "natural," "emotional" approach to the music. But it doesn't seem like one that took mature deliberation to decide and formulate...

Sometimes swelling can be a good thing. At least it's better than being a metronomic ass like my b!tch teacher.
I thought that Hansen's swelling was natural, I. e. instinct. However, I forgot what the beginning sounded like, so I'm not sure. Usually I start paying attention at the Exposition, which is where all the musicality tests start.
His swelling wasn't like Lang Lang's. Lang Lang's swelling doesn't sound like instinct, and it CERTAINLY doesn't improve the music.
As for Pogorelich, I think that his Ballade 2 performance from the Chopin Competition is really dull, and so is his Prelude Op. 28 #11. Those are the only Chopin pieces I heard him play before he became a wierdo.
-
Yes totally! If you aren't there with Ivett instead... LOL!!!! ;D
AJ would TOTALLY want to go with you instead of Ivett. ::) It's such a no-brainer ::)
Oh that's so difficult. NOT! Compared to my pre calc anyway.
>talking like a male< bruh, your pre calc is like Bartok 3. ::)

What about his Second Sonata?? Third?
And from other composers: His Gaspard?? You should also listen to his Scarlatti :P
It's interesting what you say about "swelling" - "it can be good y'know!" But I feel it's almost always more bad than good. Maybe I'll have to listen to Hansen's playing again. (By the way, I didn't say I didn't like it- I think he's one of the most distinctive competitors in here; he'll probably advance.)

I guess we have a different interperatian of "swelling", then. When you said "swelling", I thought you ment subtle accelerandos/ritardandos/rubatos, etc. That's what that b!tch teacher refers to as "swelling". However, now that I think about it, I guess you must have meant EXTREME accelerandos/ritards.
Yes, Ive heard the Ravel, its brilliant. However, many people are great at contemporary music, even when they suck at Chopin (hint Argerich)

AJ would TOTALLY want to go with you instead of Ivett. ::) It's such a no-brainer ::)
I don't know... there were a LOT of hearts on her picture on that attractive pianists thread ;)
>talking like a male< bruh, your pre calc is like Chopin Sonata 3. ::)
Exactly. Sonata 3.
-
I don't know... there were a LOT of hearts on her picture on that attractive pianists thread ;)
Exactly. Sonata 3.
I wrote Bartok 3, dumbass. If I wanted a Sonata in b minor, I could've wrote "Liszt's Sonata".
-
My ideal repertoire:
Stage I:
Nocturne Op. 48/1
Etude Op. 10/4
Etude Op. 10/2
Scherzo #3, Op. 39
Stage II:
Grande Valse Brilliante, Op. 18
Ballade #3, Op. 47
Polonaises Op. 26 (So hard to choose between this and Op. 22!)
Stage III:
Mazurkas Op. 17
Sonata #3, Op. 58
Allegro de Concert, Op. 47 as my extra piece
Stage IV:
Concerto #2, Op. 21
F minor concerto all the way.
plus the first movement of the e minor is too damn long
-
plus the first movement of the e minor is too damn long
Amen. 1st movement of f minor is completely beast.
-
OMG, guess what I found today?
It's not nearly my favorite interpretation, but still, it's worth listening to

no
-
no
You don't believe me?
-
Not as good as Zimerman, but still worth a listen.
I like the beginning played by Dang Thai Son the best, but I think for the Exposition, he plays to much like a waltz.
-
NO ONE IS BETTER THAN ZIMERMAN
except for cortot
-
Well, Zimerman's still the best, but by 2025, I think it could be a different story ;D
-
No, not 2025. I had a typo. I meant 2052 ::)
-
I think its kind of funny how I start virtually every new page haha
-
You're the starter of new ideas, I suppose?
In other news I just had the greatest practice session of my life. I worked on the Pathetique for about 75 minutes, then my Bach Prelude and Fugue, then relaxed with some Chopin (the Nocturne in g minor, op 37/1 if anyone cares).
The Chopin, although the really long chromatic run starting on the high "A" (so specific I know) needs some work, went amazingly well, especially the choral.
-

HOW DARE YOU!!!!
And Blechacz is second
-
BTW, I cant find Blechacz's playing of that Ballade anywhere. It's not on YT, nor is it in his discography.
-
OMG TAMILA SALIMDJANOVA was AMAZING. In the exposition of her Ballade (I didn't like her intro), she was able to play metronomic, yet without making it sound like a waltz!
OMG I HATE THAT B!TCH TEACHER SO MUCH NOW. I WILL NOT BE JOINING YOU GUYS, PENCILART AND IVETT AND AJLONGSPIANO AND DAVID123456
-
And the sounds the Hamelin was able to make on that Yamaha were WONDERFUL

Ivett <3

Ivett <3
Shut up. Ur causing me:
1. To become jealous 2. Release poisonous things into my bloodstream (that's what happens when you have negative feelings) 3. have an earlier death.

Why are you jealous?!?!? hahahaha

Not as good as Zimerman.

OMG Some people online are COMPLAINING about the results, saying "all their favorite pianists were knocked out", and that the Chopin Comeptition "was a scandal, and has been since 1980". what. They must be some stupid *insert b!tch teacher's names* students who have no taste.
Oh, and by calling the Chopin Competition a scandal only makes people write you off.
All my favorite pianists got in <33333333333 (I only heard a few people though, so that doesn't count ;D )

BTW, I think Yeoul Eum Son is prettier than Ivvet.

nope nope nope. People are mad because Tiffany Poon got cut lol

Well, after hearing Hansen, Poon can't stand A CHANCE.
Besides, tomorrow most people are playing the ASGP lol lol.
BUT NOT YOUR STUPID IVETT

o
Julians playing... FANTASIE IMPROMPTU lol
Seong-jin Cho's playing SONATA #2. what is he going to play 2 sonatas?
-
i'm pretty pissed that tiffany poon got out, she was one of the best
-
She had great technique but was pretty straight forward in my opinion. She's immensely talented but there are too many special players this year

ikr there are many great people
I agree, shes really straight forward and usually doesn't really spend time to enhance the music.

I'm disappointed she didn't get in though

additional comment:
Ji-yeong Mun won the 2015 Busoni... and also the 2014 Geneva (it's not nearly as big as it used to be though)... how will she fare in the Chopin? :o in any case... that's pretty aggressive, trying to garner all these competition wins...

I think she got kicked out.
I found her playing at the Busoni solo rounds (I didn't listen to the final round) even plainer than Youlan Ji's. (By far, actually).

None of those are the same as the Chopin.
For the Chopin, even ONE prize can cause an uproar that lasts for years. (I. e. Avdeeda vs Bozhanov vs Wunder vs Trifonov, Pogorelich vs Dang Thai Son, etc.)
For the Busoni, several misplaced prizes only leads to some skepticallism for a few weeks at most.
BTW, her name is Chloe now, not Ji-Yeong. Look it up on the Busoni FB page. It calls her "Chloe (Ji-yeong) Mun".
-
In my opinion I think That Richard Hamelin, Dmitry Shishkin, Eric Lu, Lucasz Krupinski, Zi qu will be among the finalists.
And I am still confused on how Yike Tony Yang got past stage 1 I found his playing sorta timid and stuff.

Me too. I thought Tiffany Poon was far better.

Why is Eric Lu at first? The judges aren't ready to give the prize to an American. :'(
Besides, there are other great people, too.
i.e. Seong-jin Cho, and I didn't hear the other people, but apparently Ivett is pretty good according to PS's unofficial boss ;D

I'M SO ROOTING FOR SEONG-JIN CHO OMG and Hamelin too and Eric Lu
Aimi Kobayashi? didn't actually listen to her lol
everyone else pales in comparison
btw Rubinsteinmad
you were right about Julian sounding better "as a woman"
I feel this too in my own playing... if I play w bare arms, I feel like a better player
-
Wow I just got done listening to Cho he was FANTASTIC! I was surprised to hear a sonata in the second stage but that's all right. He play it epicly. Same with the waltz and polonaise. I wouldn't be surprised if Lu, Kobayashi, Cho, Hamelin, and Ksiazek are all in finals.
-
someone can prove me wrong... but it seems as though all those who played op. 10 no. 11 Etude were eliminated from the 2nd round. (e.g. Tiffany Poon, Kausikan Rajeshkumar)... why...! And Tiffany's performance, despite being blurry, was quite beautiful.... maybe it was blurrier live?
holy sh-t though she got pretty lost in her 10-4 + the end was like :o but the way she "recovered" was really amazing... plus her Barcarolle...
I'm not as mad now and the jury probably took a loooong time to make this decision but still, this is quite sad... I feel the same way as AJ probably would were Ivett not in the 2nd round...
-

yes Cho's playing is amazing... I remember his Sonata 2 in the Rubinstein Competition... most of the other contestants were p flaky. Then I listened to his sonata, and I was like "damnnn!!!"
He is a master of playing with emotional intensity... even better than 2 years ago!
-
BTW here is why I think kobayashi is excellent...
-
Kate liu! please marry me, O' your fantasie in f minor touches me deeply.
Jokes, she got nothing on Yuja Wang.
Although, I don't think Yuja Wang would get far in any competition. Far too unpolished, her playing is.
-

OMG Ikr?
You should hear his playing at the Hammamatsu, if you haven't already. He was 15 when he won. My favorite performances of his from that competition are:
Transcendental Etude no. 10 (Liszt)
Mozart K332 (Mozart)
Scherzo #2 (Chopin)
AND HE WAS ONLY FIFTEEN!! Back then, he had the maturity and a HUGE understanding of music. He still does. ;D'
OMG, also listen to his Dumka at the Tchaikovsky Competition. OMG
-
Although, I don't think Yuja Wang would get far in any competition. Far too unpolished, her playing is.
I think her playing was very polished at the Verbier Festival. I mean, at her Scarlatti, Scriabin, Schubert-Liszt, and Brahms Paganini Variations. However, I agree with you, she has a lot of videos of her that are not as professional as people would expect.
-
hbilu
-
Oh also his Appssionata! And Schumann Des Abends!!
Riiiiiight y'all here hate Schumann's works
No, I LOVE Op. 12. (And Op. 17.)
Oh, and here's THIS:
Cho-Seong Jin
Starting from 16:00 is the Scherzo No. 2. He is BEAST! (Plus, he was 15.)
Starting from 26:12 is the Scherzo no. 4 (So, he did 2 Scherzos in one round!)
And afte rthat Scerzo, he does Jeux d'eau.

OMG Eric Lu's Mazurka was AMAZING
-
I haven't heard everyone's Grande Polonaise yet, but for the ones I heard (Julian Jia, Eric Lu, Kate Liu), none of them surpass Trifonov. They all sound too serious compared to Trifonov's. Trifonov's sounds so haapy and full of life.
The Andante Spianato is a different story, though. People this year play it so well!
The pressure must be huge, because most of the people either play Op. 22 or Op. 53 :P
-

I know! What about op 26?!?!!?!?!?!
-
I know! What about op 26?!?!!?!?!?!
Op. 26 is AMAZING, too. It just isn't as catchy as Op. 22 and 53, and it takes up more time.
I guess the competitors' psychology must be like this: "I don't want to be left out by playing Op. 26, so Ill stay with the group, because then I wont have a disadvantage."
My psychology would be this: "The Op. 22 is WAAYYYY to competitive, and I'm not even good. Gotta stick with Op. 26, then!" ::)
-
OMG I think Dang Thai Son's Mazurka Op. 17 #4 is even better than Rafal Blechacz's!!
I'm not usually a fan of Dang Thai Son's, but this is an exception.

I think Fou T'song is underrated. I've no idea how this relates to upcoming competitions, but still.
-
Ai ya.. kate liu, so good, give me boner! just listened to her second round performance. Sometimes I feel like she could play her fortissimos a bit louder, but then again.. Chopin never played as loud.

Watching Chopin Competition right now.
Getting my "music critic" juices flowing:
Shishkin is playing right now; he is doing fabulously. In general, his playing is clear-cut as ever. His op. 1 Rondo was incredibly organized and sometimes dance-like. The op. 9 no. 2 that came after struck everyone as a strange choice; Argerich was apparently caught dozing off by the camera! But h he played it admirably, and the "Cat Waltz" was one of the best I'd heard; unlike the many performances of it before him, Shishkin didn't carelessly play through the grace notes, but played them as artistically as the rest of the piece. Right now he is playing the Heroic Polonaise. The only concern for him is a lack of depth in his program- especially since Hamelin, who played before him, had op. 61, op. 16 and op. 44 in one program...! Hamelin's playing today was hard to listen to though, being quite heavy in the polonaises, and in great contrast to Shishkin when it comes to everything; Shishkin is much more refreshing in comparison.

Because everywhere else is infested with crap such as K-Pop and C-Pop.

OMG I think Dang Thai Son's Mazurka Op. 17 #4 is even better than Rafal Blechacz's!!
I'm not usually a fan of Dang Thai Son's, but this is an exception.
w t f, this makes me think Chopin actually composed good songs

attended his performances and a masterclass (sat first row right behind the pianos and his bench), he is an incredible performer and pedagogue. The insights he shared on a Chopin Ballade and the Sam Barber sonata were pretty profound and the students that study with him (i think he's artist in resi at a school in Canada) are pretty fortunate.
like i've said before, the Mazurkas are about the only Chopin solos i can stand to listen to/read through these days. Good post.

Ivett didnt advance my heart has been impaled...
Actually, those ......? means I can't spell their names.
BTW, Ivett is amazing.
BTW, Tony Yike Yang is not amazing.
-
Tony Yang was more technically consistent. Ivett's playing is special but I feel like she needs to refine her technique. If she can get her level of virtuosity to the same level as these other bombastic contestants I think she could win because she really has a lot of beautiful things in her playing, more so than most of the other contestants. Same thing with Hansen, he didn't pass because of his lack of virtuosity.
-
Those judges hate Chinese people. Qi Kong is WAY better than Chi Ho Han.
Those judges love South Koreans/North Koreans.
Those judges hate Scandinavians who immigrated to France. Olof Hansen is FAR > Most of the semi-finalists that were announced.
Those judges hate ..... wait....... I WONDER IF MARTHA ARGERICH IS GONNA QUIT THIS TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!! BECAUSE HANSEN IS EVEN MORE SPECIAL THAN POGORELICH!!!! (BUT IN A GOOD WAY!!!!!)

Tony Yike Yang's soul was destroyed by that Juillard teacher. Now, his technique has remained (and possibly improved), but his soul is gone................... :'(

They kicked out basically like 5% of the contestants that day, and probably just for the sake of kicking someone out. I mean, Kobayashi is beautiful, but can she beat Qi Kong at the piano>

Well, maybe Aimi is pretty good ;D But I still think that Tony Yike Yang should have been replaced by someone else. (Qi Kong? Olof Hansen?)

Yeah aimi is really really good when she's on. She wasn't on this past stage but she still got through. Hopefully she will do her best on S3! But I HATE THAT STUPID B FLAT MINOR SONATA.

I like it better than the 3rd Sonata. I think the 3rd Sonata has very little musical value to it. The 4th movement is a little bit better than the rest of the Sonata, though. The 3rd Sonata has no "pretty parts". I think it is like one of Beethoven's late Sonatas, but more shallow.
The 2nd Sonata is a little bit better. I see how music critics hate the 2nd Sonata but love the 3rd, but who cares about them? There's a reason they become music critics, not musicians.
Music is for beauty. It is not for being "perfect". Music critics like perfect, they don't appreciate natural beauty as much.

Bruh... you're like... 12. Sit down. How does the 3rd "have very little musical value?" It's one of the best examples of Chopin's later works; a rich, contrapuntal, yet thoroughly "Chopinesque" idiom. It comes from the period of Chopin's Barcarolle, Polonaise-Fantasie, the 4th Ballade... Personally I think both Sonatas are of great value; I've been familiar with both for a while I'd say... (especially the second, which I'd listen to on long car rides e.g. to some really good Chinese restaurant 100 miles away; those trips to restaurants and sh-t were how I got to know a lot of good pieces)
Being a music critic is also a great position. e.g. Harold C. Schonberg; look at how he portrays composers and pianists in such a lively way.
Don't make comments if you don't know what you're talking about and are bullshitting stuff ::)
-
Yes she is.
Meh tbh

Still, being a musician/a USEFUL music teacher is much more honorable than being a music critic, even if music critics make more money.
However, sometimes if a music critic is a professional musician himself/herself, that's fine.
-
Come on, Martha Argerich! Stand up for the injustice and eat, shoot, and leave!

You remind me of myself when I was a 7th grader. Don't be so... judging... or "judgemental" like ohmigosh. [sips Starbucks Caramel Frappucino from a straw]
and yes Argerich should just leave the jury in disgust. But now she'd be seen as doing that for the sake of doing it.
Maybe she'll be like Pascal Roge and nicely, quietly, write a letter stating her resignation.

Long-Thibaud and Liszt are not what they used to be.
Same with Geneva and Leeds
Liszt I know 2 people who just hover around first rounds of competitions.
Long I haven't heard of any of them. Except one person whose name is ONE LETTER AWAY from "Yujia"

Yeah, she's very good, but there are many pianists I like better, such as Eric Lu, George Li, and Charles Richard Hamelin, to name a few.
Oh how the tables have turned... lol

AIMI MADE IT!!!! YES YES YES YES <3 <3 <3
-
I was surprised that Ksiazek didn't make it but other than that, great results!
OMG did you see the scene after they announced the results where Tony Yike Yang was basically almost crying?
OMG I have nothing againsty him anymore. Why does it have to take so much to make me like someone? I'm so evl :P
The expression was basically like, "Finally!"(As you may know, he didn't manage to get in the Semi-finals of neither the CIPC Young Artists or neither the Cliburn Junior ??? . Some of the people who beat him were clearly inferior to him, i.e. Chaeyoung Park and Youlan Ji.
Even though that probably isn't why he was crying, it would probably be the reason I'd cry if I was him.
-
Yeah he seems like such a kind kid.
-
NO KRZYSZTOF KSAIZEK?
-
Yeah he seems like such a kind kid.
Yeah he seems like such a kind kid.
ikr I have to listen to his playing again with less bias.
OMG how can just one kid change your feelings so much about 1 conservatory?
I no longer have "pro-Curtis anti-Juillard" feelings.
This makes me reaslize just how biased I am.
-
NO KRZYSZTOF KSAIZEK?
NO KRZYSZTOF KSAIZEK?
Dude this is a COMPETITION. Don't take 1 result so seriously. Besides he is ALREADY FROM POLAND. So he doesn't have much to lose anyways. His home is only like at most a 5 hour drive away.

I just voted for Eric Lu and Seong-jin Cho for the audience prize. Too bad I'm pretty sure most people will vote for Soeng-jin Cho just cause he's Korean.
I actually think Eric Lu plays more inspring.
I liked Seong-jin Cho's Hamamatsu (age 15) perofrmances, though.

Honestly, stop bringing up race when talking about competitions. I used to be like you; I brought up ethnicity and politics a lot. But thinking about it, what's in it for competitions to be like that? I regard most statements like "the jury of X competition is rigged" or "they didn't want a guy from X country to win" as bordering on conspiracy theories; you might as well also wear tinfoil hats and believe in chemtrails.
Cho plays with a unique style; his playing at 15 was great, but he is also evolving and maturing as an artist. In his playing, I hear the same attention to detail, but now I think he wants to play in a more organized and rigid way. At age 15, he was much more "emotionally driven."
Of course, maybe you think Cho has "devolved" his style the way many child prodigies (supposedly?) become average later on in life... and you wish he played the way he used to be :/

Cho plays with a unique style; his playing at 15 was great, but he is also evolving and maturing as an artist. In his playing, I hear the same attention to detail, but now I think he wants to play in a more organized and rigid way. At age 15, he was much more "emotionally driven."
Of course, maybe you think Cho has "devolved" his style the way many child prodigies (supposedly?) become average later on in life... and you wish he played the way he used to be :/
No no u misunderstand!
I was not talking about the JURY, I was talking about the PUBLIC! :D (The public will like Cho cause he's Korean and Koreans [the females] are awesome)
BTW, I don't think you should call Cho a "prodigy" at age 15. He was WAYYYYY too good to be called a prodigy. But yeah, I thought his playing was very good back then, and it still is, but I don't feel the same inspiration. :/
Not for other "prodigies" though. I think George Li sucked as a child, but now hes awesome.

yeah, that's what I was saying; I think Cho is "maturing" in terms of tastes, but it seems like you're interpreting the same thing as "losing inspiration." But everything is relative I guess.
you know who really wasn't great as a child? Eric Lu tbh.
I really thought nothing of him when he was younger i.e. in middle/high school. He played everything with so much tension during "those years," and wasn't particularly professional-sounding or anything... to me, he was just another piano playing kid on YouTube.
When he won E-piano though, I was like WHOA! Is this the same Eric Lu?
And listening to his Ettlingen performance right now from when he was 12- I'm pretty sure there were lots of technical superpower teenagers; how did he win the thing??

lol when I heard his Haydn I was like, "meh, hes only 150% better than George Li"
(Not that I can do any better, of course)
When I heard his Chopin Concerto #1, I was amazed, but still I was FAR more amazed by Seong-jin Cho (but his recording of him playing Chopin Concerto #1 at 13 is not very inspiring either :P )
I like Cho's Sonata a lot. Its awesome. His Funeral March's D flat Major part is clearly divine.

He's CLEARLY been playing the op. 35 for a long time! I like it a lot too

I think saying " George Li sucked as a child " is going a bit too far :P. He most certainly did not suck. He's always been a talented kid.

Go. Watch. His. Videos.
I mean, he didn't suck, but compared to what he is now, he SUCKED

If he sucked, then gosh what am I LOL ;D

Of course! That's just common sense.... Pianists don't really devolve... And no, Cho did NOT devolve

Yundi Li devolved ;D
I agree, Cho did NOT devolve, it was just rubinsteinmad who was saying that

damn that dude must be good! I see why they didn't give him 1st... he's so young, that's why.
Why didn't they do that with Debargue? Not award a first place, give 2nd to Debargue, tie Li and Geniusas for 3rd?? :P

Salty huh :P
Debargue = Tchaikovsky
He's like famous
Another example: if I were talking about Yundi winning X competition, would it not be obvious that I'm talking about the Chopin? You'd be waaaaay overthinking if you'd been thinking about anything else :P
-
You guys probably don't know what the Santander COmpetiion is, but its pretty presitigious. It is one of the few competitions where if you get a prize, you are automatically accepted in the Chopin Comeptition.
This year winnr are:
First Prize Juan Pérez Floristán
Second Prize David Jae-Weon Huh
Third Prize Jianing Kong
Canon Audience Prize: Juan Pérez Floristán

damn; well good on them!
I didn't know this competition existed though :P NEVER MIND it's the Paloma O'Shea... I know that one... A couple of my classmates were in it, so I always thought it was "just" a junior competition. Now I know that they had huge ambitions ;D

Oh, and the Honens and the Clara Haskil ended in September.
The Honens gives 100,000 Canadian Dollars to the 1st prize winner.

yeah, the "largest piano prize" in the world (well the largest prize EVER given was in the first [and last] Ivo Pogorelich Competition, $100,000 USD...? idk, CAD vs. USD...)
but even so, the Honens is not that popular... if I heard that a guy won the Honen's, I'd be like, "yeah, he's good, respect" but I wouldn't be crying tears of joy and shouting YASSSSSSS like I was when Cho won the Chopin competition

and yes Argerich should just leave the jury in disgust.
Well on this page, she looks like shes about to fling her purse at someone...

'kay, so Im listening to the Hammamatsu Competition right now.
Dario Martin's Beethoven Op. 109 is SO BEAUTIFUL :o
-
But anyways, I LOVE the sound quality of the Hammamatsu Livestreams.
My favorite sound-quality is the Chopin Competition, with the Liszt and Hammamatsu close behind.
-
How refreshing, no etudes in the first round...and some interesting repertoire.
-

Yeah, but I wish they allowed Clementi Sonatas.
Beethoven Sonatas are pretty enlightening, but the Haydn and Mozart Sonatas are not always very interesting...
-
Marcel Mok is amazing too.
His Haydn Sonata (especially in the 3rd movement), he brings up sounds that make it sound fuller, as if played by an orchestra. However, his nervousness in the 3rd movement made him not so flawless.
His Tombeau de Couperin was exquisite. I cant express in words how beautiful it was.
-
Kato Daiki's performance was amazing as well.
The Mephisto Waltz inner sections were as exquisite as 'exquisite' can get.
-
Daniel Hsu, hailinig from the USA, gave the most sincere performance of Chopin's Scherzo #3 that Ive ever heard.
Watch out, France and Russia! The USA is not far behind!
-
too bad I can't delete other people's quotes of my posts

Aaaaah! I forgot about the Hammamatsu starting this past weekend!
I have to watch this evening!
Is the standard high this year?
-
"you're weird, sir..."
do you know where that's from?
Charlie Brown
-
Is the standard high this year?
REALLY REALLY high
-
'KAY, so for STAGE II:
Shen Lu makes so much sense out of the Alborada of Ravel. He manages to make it sound very tonal (unlike some other pianists).
-
Is anyone else absolutely struggling with the live streaming?
Even when I set down the quality to 180p its still very halting and hard to listen to. Its terrible.
Its such an interesting competition. 8(
That's even on a 10Mb bandwidth connection.

Timofei Vladimirov (Russia)
Sofya Menshikova (Russia)
-
Anyways, I'm rather disappointed by the Telekom Beethoven Competition; however, my opinion may change once I listen to the recordings.
The reason I'm disappointed is that the jury have eliminated most of the contestants that I've heard of in the past (Jianing Kong, Peter Friis Johansen, Jong Hai Park, etc.) However, perhaps I may find new pianists to listen to!
The finalists are:
Moritz Winkelmann
Ben Cruchley
Filippo Gorini
-
Well actually, the Telekom Beethoven Competition, the contestants are all AMAZING! :D
It must be very competitive.
Ben Cruchley's performance of the Paganini Variations were superb! Though contrasted from Wei Luo's stunning performance, it was equally amazing, if not better. :o Also, he introduced me to Schumann's Op. 82, playing it better than I ever imagined Schumann could be.
-
BTW, Yeoul Eum Son just made 16 posts in a row on her Instagram Account

UNISA international piano competition started yesterday in South Africa with an opening concert I did not attend.
Off to the 1st round Jazz piano tonight (Classical starts tomorrow). It should prove quite entertaining.
I don't think they stream for watching though.
A lot of Russian/Korean pianists in classical this year. I am hoping for fascinating repertoires!
-
Well it was an interesting compeition.
My views:
Classical suffered a bit from adding Jazz in the sense that I feel the competition was significantly easier than before. There is no more Mozart Concerto round for instance, which I think is very demanding round.
The pianists, being restricted to 13 Jazz and 13 Classical, meant less variety of players (although it was easier to watch with fewer repetitions of works). Also, there were far fewer spectators than the past. Bad advertising? Or uncertainty about the mixed styles?
Jazz was interesting and most enjoyable. But its always such a huge "brain switch" from Jazz to classical. That said, this time around the Classical player's technique was clearly far harder, more interesting and spectacular than the Jazz. Its not often you can do such a clear comparison.
The pianists:
The classical winner, Daniel Ciobanu was very interesting to watch! He has great technique and colours, although I felt sometimes speed overtook musicality. He's certainly superbly capable. I am looking forward to some winners recitals. His final Paganini Variations were riveting from start to finish. I am also glad I got to see Silvestri's Bacanale. Different, but very virtuoso piece.
I also enjoyed Kana Ito's playing. She was my favourite for a while. Her Totentanz was spectacular. I was a bit disappointed she did not make the finals. Perhaps her Haydn was not as good as it should have been. I thought few players got the classical sonatas right. Except the Korean Seomseung Lee, who made Haydn actually sound like Haydn.
Philipp Scheucher also played very well although I felt I missed a little fire.
For the Jazz, Addison Frei was most entertaining and a deserving winner, but I really enjoyed Sebastiaan van Bavel as well. He had a very intense improvisation session in the finals that were a pleasure to watch.
I can't help hoping that they will expand the competition a little and raise the standard again. After all, the first winner of the competition was Marc-Andre Hamelin and there were other very famous pianists in the past. I would hate to lose the possible participation of the world's top players.
