Title: What's up in your life right now???
Post by: go12_3 on May 08, 2009, 08:30:35 AM
I thought I'd throw in a new topic here, we need something *new* to post about. You can let us know what you are doing in your lives, like going to college,  any travels , or doing a recital, or having an interesting hobby to share about, or whatever you would like to share:

My life is good right now,  my playing piano and violin has been great this week; I've  enjoyed playing my instruments.  My students are doing well in their lessons.  It has been raining a lot a week ago which is typical in the Spring in Idaho.  Right now I am up at 2:20am(my time) due to an allergy and typing this.  I have chatted with two members last night.  And, of course, I am looking forward to the weekend of relaxing!   :)

best wishes,

Lol do you really want to know it? I could write a huge fat book every day :P ;D

In a nutshell: I am weaving a carpet of thoughts and sounds that is supposed to connect past, present and future and is also supposed to make sense when it's done. That means I'm every day changing many times. That means I am connecting informations from many different times and places which seem to meet in my everyday life. I have ended my piano break and started again to work on my program "Styx. A Long Journey" which I want to overhaul and optimize.

What's up, what's up? (Have you any Zen?)

After a blissful encounter a couple weeks ago, my life is back in the dumps. I guess what comes up must come down. Summer vacation means not having to do anything except band practice every Monday and piano lesson every Wednesday. It's been raining all week (a typhoon passed) so i was barely able to practice piano, or do anything for that matter other than sleep and keep myself warm.

Finished reading Sun Tzu - Art of War yesterday, now I'm reading Gabriel Garcia Marquez - Chronicle of a Death Foretold. I have many books lined up; I've collected a lot, but hardly read more than a few favorites. So I got some books I haven't read before and put them on my desk so I would read them first.

I plan to watch a movie each day this month, and I started with a bunch of movies with Ashton Kutcher. I like him. He's always the guy who gets into trouble, but is so sweet that things go right again... somehow... fun movies yeah... Except for The Butterfly Effect, that was REALLY screwed up. But in a sense, it's the same, it's still him getting into trouble, only it's not quite a happy ending.  :'(

I'm watching a couple Japanese movies that a friend suggested. Just finished Swing Girls, so now it's Heavenly Forest. But Forest felt so dragging, and it's cold again so I fell asleep... Oh well... *yawn*

I'm working on my final presentation for theory on Monday and then I should be graduating with a MM degree in Performance!  I'm starting to prepare for DMA auditions, which will take place in February.  I've been living in Greensboro, NC, for 2 years and I love it so much that I've decided to stay here for now.  I hope to spend the summer playing lots of gigs and finding a nice apartment away from campus.

What's up, what's up? (Have you any Zen?)

I played piano today, after 3 days of not touching it. It felt brand new. After half an hour though, I had this numbness at the right backside of my head. And after 2 hours, my back and hands were strained. I stopped to find that not only did I have those pains, I also had a little headache and stomachache. Was it the sandwich I left on top of the piano while playing, and then forgot about for like, 30 mins?  :P

Starting to watch Atashinchi no Danshi. Other than that, nothing new under the sun.

After being laid off for 4 months from the job I've had for almost 17 years, my boss changed my schedule, which I've also had for the past 17 years, so it is impossible for me to continue to take piano lessons. It also means I have to cancel my upcoming recital.

My husband is still out of work and has been unemployed since last July. He may be getting called back in June at which time I plan to quit my job and look for another part-time position. I won't be able to work full time since I will be starting college in the fall. However, right now life sucks big time. (Oh and my beloved cat is getting sicker and sicker and I will probably have to have him put to sleep sometime soon.)

Right now, I feel more content with my life....my music is going well.  My violin sang so sweetly all last week.  My piano pieces are coming along, even the difficult pieces.
I enjoy this forum very much and the new *friends* I have made here.  And it's a wonderful Spring time here where I live.  Love the beauty of my backyard.  Been working outside the past few days.  Life is good now......and full of joy and love, too .    :)

I feel for you and understand the frustration about having no job. I also lost my job back in January 08 and for some stupid reason ( the recession?)  Can’t get a job too as everyone seems reluctant to take juniors on or do internships. I have only just have a tiny bit of freelance work this year. Its seems so stupid I worked really hard at university left with a 1st, seemed to have a good future ahead of me and this. Warning to you other university students: its VERY VERY VERY hard to get a job even if you have done well  >:(, I think geting a job is down to dumb luck most of the time, and being in the right place at the right time and having contacts. So right now I would say my life is pretty shite. :'(

The only happy thing keeping me going is my piano study and getting ready to do my grade 2 in July, oh and this Beethoven quote: 'I shall seize fate by the throat, it will not bend and crush me completely ' If Beethoven kept going and he lost a lot more then me then I should keep going too.

I am also sorry to hear about that... :'(

Right now I am working on some pieces for piano/violin from the Secrect Garden Collection.
The music is composed by Rolf Lovland.  As I played through the book last Saturday, on the piano, and most of the pieces are just wonderful.  I found a few that are comfortable with my violin though because of the melody appeals to me:  "Nocturne,"  "Adagio,"  and "You Raise Me Up."  I already knew the "Song From the Secret Garden"  (for violin) a few weeks ago.
My Chopin's Fantaisie Impromtu and Etude 10/1 is coming along.  My right hand on the Etude is more familiar with those running arpeggios.

best wishes,

Yeah I've been there in 2007. Visited some former student's families and started my bicycle trip from Greensboro to Philly. Great place. I loved all those birds that are so different from our European birds and singing so wonderfully :)

Right now i still have winter holidays :)  :D . But I don't have that much time for everything i want to do. We have one more doggie at home now because her owners are on holidays for 2 weeks.  And she needs to go for a walk ALL the time. And she needs a lot of attention too :)
Yesterday I had piano lesson and it was kinda interessting :). In the house where i have piano lessons (my music school) also lives this really cute and great and beautiful and cool doggie. I mean he is a huge dog and sometimes i just want to kidnap him cause he is sooo cool! :) And usually he is not in the house but outside. And everytime after my piano lesson we eat my lunch together :) And yesterday he was in the house and i was really happy to see him so i petted him and hugged him even though he was all wet because it was raining outside really a lot. And right at that moment my teacher opened the door. And she was like: oooohhh nooooo! and then you're going to touch the piano with hands like that! And she really didn't look too happy. Well its not like i was going to play the piano with wet hands  ::) i was going to wipe them in my clothes, but she made me go wash my hands  ::) I was afraid she was going to be angry but she was ok after that :). And then i was playing on yamaha piano and now im sure that the keys on yamaha pianos are a lot easier to press than on kawai. I noticed that when we were buying my piano and i first tried playing on yamaha and then on kawai (the one i have now :) ) . And usually i play on kawai in my piano lessons too and yesterday when i played on yamaha it was really funny :)
And then it was someting else too :) I kinda thought that my teacher didn't like very much how i played. Because a lot of times she looks kinda annoyed and like she doesn't like my playing and she tells me sooo many things im doing wrong. And yesterday at the end of the lesson she was looking at some pieces that she said I was going to learn next. And for one piece she said that maybe i would play it for the exam at the end of the year because she said it had a lot of different dynamics and she said that would be really good for me because im good at that and i could show a lot. I was really really surprised :) And she said that not everybody is good at that and that some just play forte and piano and nothing else but that I listen to what i play and so im good at that :) :) i was soooo surprised she said that!!! and happy :) And she said it in kinda funny way, like she shouldn't have said it or something…
And yesterday it was raining but today its snowing again :)
And my mum wants to learn to play the piano too :) and i said i would teach her :) well i know i couldn't really teach her a lot but maybe at least some things i know :) and maybe i will teach my toys :) and imaginary friends and we'll have piano lessons :) and they would have a recital then :) oh and im having a recital on march 13th :).
ohh and im talking soooo much and i feel kinda stupid because of that but im talking anyway  :P :)

My heart goes out to all those who have posted here and are experiencing tragedy and/or are out of work. It's tough, it's discouraging, but you must keep pushing. You never know when the next open door will yield a result.

Just before winter set in I completed a road trip around the US. It was really time to do it. Slept in a different hotel every night and drove about 4 hours a day. Started in the most SW corner of the US then up to the NW corner, followed the 47th parallel to St. Mary's Falls, then South to Nashville and then I40 home. It took about a month but was worth it.

Yes traveling Europe is fantastic and you see fabulous things. Traveling the US is totally different because you can (whether you wish to or not) get into conversations and read local newspapers in your own language, thereby getting a real local insight into how people live, issues, etc. The US is more diverse than you might think.

So I will have my music school mondays and thursdays and doggy school wednesdays and fridays :) :) I hope I will still have enough time to practice piano a lot!! well i will have too!! :) But I am a little woried what if the doggy doesn't like me or something and what if he doesn't listen to me at all?  :-\ I mean it would be kinda bad if those people paid me to teach their doggy something and then he wouldn't learn anything!  :-[ Oh well I hope it will be ok! :)

- Teaching my girlfriend Tagalog.
- Reading self-help articles/ ebooks plus my girlfriend's autobiography and a couple other books.
- It's Holy Week, so I'll be away in the province for a while (Wednesday - Friday).
- What's up everyone? I hope someone here still remembers me. If not, HELLO.  ;D

It's been a good week, although a bit quiet. I'm starting to regret having my routine as I'm getting a little bored.

I think I need your help. About my future, I'm still thinking and daydreaming about playing and teaching music but I've stopped practicing. Anyone who's seen me on Pianostreet knows how frustrated I am with music. I quit music school and went to college, and now I'm doubting if I made the right decision. What am I going to do? Quitting college and going back to music school would be so awkward. I'm running in circles.

At first I thought, suppose I start a practice routine on my own. When I've firmly established it and climbed back to my previous levels, I will find a new teacher to guide me to the higher levels. Now I can't even start practicing. It seems I am so afraid of failure, I can't even touch my books or the instruments. I used to play piano and guitar and started with violin.

I know I gotta do something about this. I just don't know what and how. Should I quit music totally? Should I pick up an instrument (which one?) and focus on that? Or should I pick everything up from scratch and see how well I do before I decide to drop anything?

Hey, db,
I think most people go through a period of not knowing what they want to do and making that decision can be difficult.  The best thing is what is your passion?  What is the one thing that makes you happy.
Pick out that one thing and focus upon that for a while.  I know I even go through periods when I don't touch my violin and guitar for weeks, especially the guitar.  I think when we are creative it makes it harder for us to focus upon ONE thing and then we try to do so many things to fill up our empty time and days. Then it becomes harder to make a decision on what to do.  About college and music school, which one have you enjoyed the most?  I have heard you play piano and guitar.  I feel you have a talent in playing the guitar in my opinion.  Pick it up and play it for awhile and see how you feel.  Sometimes we go through periods in our lives that we may not feel productive and it's okay.  There are periods in our lives we have to rest our minds from so much activity, I know I go through those times when I don't feel like I'm going anywhere with the pieces I'm learning on the piano or whatever I create with my mind and heart.  I hope you can find something with your piano or guitar that will bring fulfillment within you always.

Perhaps that's my problem. I don't know where my passion is. I am trying to live without passion and it's starting to get boring. I don't know how I'm going to cope once the school year starts. Part of my dilemma is figuring out my schedule if I do decide to squeeze some music in.

I want to learn more about music somehow. I've told you about wanting to become a teacher. This hasn't changed... Thanks for listening...

Enjoy!

I know this forum should be about piano but I would like to know more about that instrument. Is there another forum somewhere dedicated to banjo? Let us know how you are doing with it.

I have tried various styles and banjos, but it is impossible to learn all of them well (for me anyway).

Therefore, I have decided to concentrate on Plectrum Banjo which always felt more natural to me. It just sort of fell into my arms perfectly.

Banjohangout has a thread dedicated to 4 string banjos, but outside of US, I don't think many people play a plectrum. Most tend to go for either tenor or 5 string.

I guess i like to be different.

*sounds the trumpet* du, du du duuuuu

I am cramming like mad before going to see Maestro tomorrow ... soon it will be a weekend by myself (except for my lessons) dedicated solely and completely to music study ... ahhhh ... in some hotel room in a city which has become a home away from home.  I will take a few walks but other than that, I will live, move, eat, breathe, sleep music ... and then it will ooze out of me  8).  Magical Musica !!  (I'm pretty sure that music often wears a mask and a cape and probably even has a wand !)

I will live, move, eat, breathe, sleep music

Thats the way i feel at the moment, but it never seems to last long with me.

I have started to actually play a lot more and last night was one of those rare occasions when everything seemed effortless. It was as if Thalberg himself was guiding my fingers.

I dare not touch the piano tonight in case it has all gone.

Excellent! All the more reason now to get someone to try to commission Elliott Carter to write a concerto for it.

I would settle for a Fantasy on "Yes, we have no bananas".

Do not think that is his "style".

"We know why you rubberneck..."

That's pretty powerful stuff. Could you source that for us?

Those are lyrics from Copeland's song, On the Safest Ledge.
"We know why you rubberneck..." is from Palahniuk's book, Rant.

Someone stole the smileys from the signature.  I think it was Nils.  (Bob thinks Nils is now selling his smileys on the Swedish black market.)

Haha.  I don't think Nils likes things to move around a lot on the pages.

I'm celebrating the triumph of a good friend, and looking at myself with that wonder, "Are you a musician?" Meanwhile (a mean while) I have this duel feeling of having a lot on my plate and nothing much to do.

Today was a *very* good day, by the way. And in the way, too!

(But when and how will I compose again? Is that the life I should breathe?)

(No it's not!)

(But...)

Is this thread about anything? I forgot.

Not much. I am at home all the time because of my social phobia. I am going to visit a coach soon that will help me finding some kind of activity or work outside my home. I play the piano a lot everyday and when I don't play the piano I draw faces or am on singsnap.com (a karaoke site). I can't sing well but I have tons of fun doing it. I also love to play with my dog and being with my mom. :)

This is one of my drawings:

SO: tomorrow I have music theory exams! I have to be there 15 minutes to 2 p.m. and then at 2 we are writing 1st grade test and two dictations. And then at 3 p.m. we are writing 2nd grade test and two dictations (and also that half and whole tone hearing test). Then at 4.30 p.m. everyone goes in by themselves and they tell you what mistakes you made at the test and then you have to  do some exercises and sight singing - that's for first grade, and at 6 p.m. the same for 2nd grade. And then on friday....... piano exams! well we'll see if I survive all that!  :-\ Think of me!  :)

So today was really cool at the exams! :)  8) We weren't writing a test for 1st and 2nd grade but just for 2nd grade. And I only had one mistake (with half and whole tones  ::) just cause I changed it later  ::) ) but other than that I didn't have any mistakes in the test and not in the dictations either!!!  :o  :)  8)  :P . And then I had to sight sing some exercises (for 1st and 2nd grade) and there were three teachers there and they were writing something and they were really nice cause I was nervous at first and I couldn't start singing right at first, and they said I can wait a little and then I did and I sang it in my head and then it was ok :) and then they said I should wait outside a little but I didn't really have to wait very much because one of the teachers came out and said: 5 of course... and 5 is the best grade! :)  :)  :)  :)  :) . We have grades from 1 to 5. And 1 means you didn't pass the exam, and 2 means you just passed, and 3 is good, and 4 is very good, and 5 is excellent.  :) So I am really happy now!!!!!!!  :)  :D  :P  8)  :)  :)
But tomorrow.......... piano exam............ At 4 p.m. (but I have to be there at 3.30 or even sooner) and I don't think that will be so good because my hands will be shaking and I'll make mistakes.. :-\  :(  >:( oh well I won't think about that I'll just try to enjoy!!! Playing on a Steinway grand piano!!!!!!!! who cares about those teachers there and about the grade I'll get  ::)  :P  :P  :P  :)

And good luck for tomorrow!  8)

Well... it's one bad and one good thing... The bad thing is that my dad is in a bad mood again... and he is arguing with my mum.....
And the good thing is I got a 5 (the best grade) for my 1st and 2nd grade piano exam!!!  :)
So now I have 2 grades of music theory and piano! :) (but I think 2nd grade in our country is like 1st abrsm.)
And it was cool at the exam and all the teachers were really nice. And before the exam I was playing on another grand piano to warm up (but not on a Steinway but Yamaha) and there was another grand piano in that room. And another girl that had the exam right after me was playing in another room on another grand piano and there was also another grand piano in that room :) I wish I could go there sometimes to practice!!!!!!!!!!! And at first at the exam was really funny because they have this weird piano bench (if that's what's it called) that you move up and down like you have to move one thing underneath and if you don't sit on the bench it just jumps up and if you sit on it then it goes down... and when I came there it was too high so I moved that thing while I was sitting on the bench and it just fell down so then it was too low... and then my teacher came to help me and she put it too high again and then when she wanted to put it a little lower again that thing that you have to move  didn't want to move anymore  ;D so then one of those teachers came to help :) I think someone should have recorded that! I think it would be a funny video of me and my teacher fighting with that piano bench at my piano exam  ;D but all those teachers were really nice and they weren't angry or something :) So then I started playing and I made a mistake at my 3rd piece for 2nd grade but I just went on. And when I was playing the 2nd and 3rd piece for 2nd grade my hands were shaking. But then I really liked playing the last one cause it's really nice and relaxing :) and when I finished and I looked at the teachers they were all smiling :) and my piano teacher was smiling a lot too :)  :) that was really cool :) but I was still worried cause i did make a mistake. And then that other girl went in and then we had to wait for a while.... and then one teacher came out and said we got a 5! and our teacher asked if both of us got a 5 and she said yes :) and we were really happy  :)  :P And that other girl's mum was there too (my mum couldn't be cause she was at work, but that girl is just 8 or 9 or something) and she was really nice too and she said that was really stressful for us cause we were still a little too little for all that (well I don't know if she meant me too cause I'm older). And she congratulated me too. And she asked me how many hours a day I practice. And my teacher said I was good :)
But my parents don't have time to be happy about my exams cause they're arguing, well my mum was but now she's sad.
Well I'm happy about my exams!  :) I'm really happy  :)  :) And it's soooo cool to play on a grand piano!!!  8)  8)   8) and that school is soooo cool!!!  8)  8)  8)  :)

Yes that's one good, well actually many good, and one bad news. Congratulations on your successful exam!! :)

I remember how much I suffered as a child when my parents got into arguments with each other. I remember once ( I think I must have been 5 or 6 years old) I started crying and yelling at them: Don't argue! Be at Peace!

It felt like dying to me...

I hope all will be okay. My parents were okay after all, they stayed together until my dad passed away a few years ago, so I guess it was a really good marriage after all :)

Well yes it feels kinda like being sick when we're arguing... like our whole family is being sick... cause when you're sick you can't do so much and you can't do the things you would like to do because you're too tired and everything hurts...

But the exams were really great!!! I can't believe it was sooo great!!!!!!! Just perfect!!  :)  :P  8)

On saturday I have my final recital this year (i mean before summer holidays). The recital will have three parts (I'm in the second one, i'm the 3rd in the second part, which starts at 1 p.m.), because there's almost 100 of us!!!!  :o  :)
And I had my piano lesson today (and my teacher gave me some new pieces to learn - for during the summer holidays)... and then I only have my piano lesson one more time next week and then I won't have any piano lessons till september!!!    :( :'(
And today when I was going home from my piano lesson it started raining sooooooo much!!! I had to wait under a bridge or whatever that is (it's just a small bridge I guess  :-\ cars can drive over it and people go under it). And there was also thunder and lightning so it was really scary but it was also cool because it was raining so much that the water was running like a little river under that bridge and the wind was blowing so it was carrying the rain under the bridge and it was like being near a sprinkler! :) that was cool  8) But at first I was really scared but then some other people came and waited there for a while too so then it wasn't that scary anymore. so it was just cool!  :)

So today is the last day of school in my country! Tomorrow is a national holiday (I think it's when our country has become independent or something like that). And today I just have my piano lesson at 5 and then it's over for the summer  :'( .... I mean holidays are great and summer is great, but I will miss my piano lessons!! and even my music theory!! But I'll play my piano A LOT!! So that will be great! :) And I will teach my mum to play piano, because I started teaching her when I first got my piano but she never had time, so I hope she will have more time now!!!

I've been doing portraits in graphite for commissions in order to earn $$ somehow.
I only have 8 piano students so things are quite slow for me.  I hope to obtain more
students this Fall....I still practice piano and violin.

Well, my monster nearly rules me lately.  It is exhausting me completely and I walk around like a zombie now for a couple of weeks and in a music and piano daze.  Everything, lately, it tells me looks like food.  I am driving along and the trees and mountains look like meat for my monster, and music sounds like meat, and reading reads like meat.  My monster is just hungry, hungry ... and absorbing so, so, so, so much.  And, I can't sleep because my monster wakes me up, wanting to go to the piano in the wee hours of the morning, even when I can hardly hold open my eyes anymore and I am literally nearly sleeping at the piano.  And, when I sleep my monster is still stirring and being itchy and musical.  I am going to try to go to sleep early tonight.

So then I climbed into a tree too to get my cat...  and I really like climbing trees anyway  :P but it was all wet and slippery so it wasn't that easy, and my clothes got all dirty  :P But it was really cool  8)  8)

I do realistic subjects and some from my imagination.

And I walked home then because I didn't wanna go by bus because the weather was really great and it was really warm after a long time... but it's really far... and I needed 1 hour and a half! and I was walking fast! And it was cool, but then at the end I was sooo thirsty that I was seeing water in my head all the time :)

I wouldn't worry, it probably goes well with your moustache.
On anothder thread, you sought to claim that littletune's presence on this board made you feel about 12; clearly, this did not denote your waist measurement either in imperial inches or proper metric centimetres, but we need not worry about this, since your answer above now clarifies beyond any doubt that this figure refers to the age that you feel, as such a comment could hardly have come from anyone above that age.

Best,

Alistair

your monster might like it. no? :)

Yeah  :).  Actually, monsty enjoys it a little, I hate to say ... hee hee.

What's up in my life right now is that everyday I become more percent monsty, but I don't know what percent I currently am.  I thought maybe monsty would just completely pop out one day, but that's not how it's going down.  I have to let monsty emerge bit by bit, day by day.  Sometimes even that is so much at once!  Each morning now I wake up to my alarm clock at 3am, and I go and sit on the living room floor before I start my practicing, and I get really quiet and concentrated and come to terms with things.  At this point, I have learned that the sun actually does come up every day and the rest of the world gradually does wake up, too, but sometimes it has seemed like it wouldn't be so!  But now, when it seems that way, I realize that it seems that way but then the dawn actually still comes and life turns somewhat normal (though everyday is a little less normal).

Okay.  Well, sometimes it seems like it has a tail and stuff, but I don't think it does.  It's a massive force though, and I have realized that I need to actually let it shape every portion of who I am, and not try to decide what it has to be like -- it forms me, I don't form it.

It's OK, Alistair, I believe there is a little moustache (and mullet!) in all of us ... we just need to discover it and be patient while it unfolds within our lives :).  In spiritual reality, we are all One in moustache and mullethood.  We are one big spiritually hairy family.  Anybody who denies this is just fooling themselves.

Thanks :).

Ugh.  I am just *bursting* with burny thoughts and feelings lately.  It comes in waves.  Sometimes it's so intense for an hour or even a day (or maybe even dayS ?) and the whole world is turned upside down, and I just wish I could burst out to somebody (and maybe devour them  ;D)!  Eventually I can calm myself down and sometimes I wake up in the wee hours and wonder what ever seemed so different the day before, but it's a very intense way to live.  I can say though that it's a *very* good thing I've got some plans, otherwise Monsty would eat me up completely.

Not wanting to state the obvious I've held back suggesting you try getting into sports. Even regular exercise can do a lot to silence the aggressive voice inside. If it still is talking you can crank up the level of contact and aggression of the sport. I'm in contact with a lot of "cage" fighters (MMA) and they speak of having a similar voices inside before they got into the sport.

Whatever you do you must try to silence that voice. Allowing it to grow could lead to a split. Remember, " that a house divided against itself will fall." And, in a civil war there are no winners.

Thank you, Wolfi :).  Yes, I keep trying to write it out, make charts about it and then even draw it out, but there are never enough dimensions.  I am needing to be very patient while it unfolds each day in concept.  I think that ultmately it will be expressed in music that I play, sing, and write, but I am trying to condense into one idea something that seems like a huge web (though it originates as one idea and I can already 'get' that).  I'll get there :).

Yeah, but I wonder if we are thinking of the same thing?  For a little moment I am feeling patient :).  So far I can only hold(ish) this all in concept, and it's something somewhat concrete there and expanding still.  But, do you suggest that it can *only* be expressed in music?  And, I don't even know for sure if what I am thinking is what composers were thinking, but I am starting to think it is.  And, if it is, it's a crazy thing :).

One little snippet that I can manage to actually put into words is that I am beginning to think of something like minor chords as not just minor chords but, along the lines of thinking of chords as something like scales with holes in it, you can think of minor chords in modes.  For example, you can think of d minor as a(n) Dorian chord, a Phrygian chord, or an Aeolian chord (and each of these modes could be considered "minor" or so).  But, there's tons more to it.

*only* in music? Not necessarily. But it is you as a creator and artist who decides what to express and how.

I have heard you play d-f-g as a chord I so never heard before, though this combination appears otherwhere in music. But the "context" you played it in was different. Analysis comes afterwards. Creation is first.

(...) you can think of d minor as a(n) Dorian chord, a Phrygian chord, or an Aeolian chord (and each of these modes could be considered "minor" or so).

Wait, no, no.  d minor is only Dorian (and originally Dorian) and a once-removed Aeolian -- I forgot what I was thinking.  It only acts as a Phrygian in a Bb Ionian model (a twice-removed scale) ... argh ... but never has the true makeup of a Phrygian chord, it only has the model of the makeup when you "imagine" the key signature around it.  I think.

All scales are some variation of or built into the original C Ionian.  Then, there is the sharped version of C Ionian and the flatted version of C Ionian.   Everything is built upon that, borrowing from each other as needed.  I think.  arghy.

Synthesis is what's up in my life right now, I believe.  It's quite an experience :).  It's as though everything I've ever been, and so much of that having seemed to be different "parts" to me (like athletics, drawing, writing, music (voice, composition, improvising, piano ... etc)), it's as though it's all becoming one.  I know that truly it has always been one, but it's been a rough ride  :P.  Still a bit shy about it though and having trouble letting it show.  Step by step.  I think that must just be Monsty.

The one thing i miss about my youth is track and field.

There is not much on earth that is more exciting than a javelin competition. Now, i have to sit and watch.

I threw javelin :).  I did throwing events, though I had wanted to run, also.  Track and Field was fun, but my first love was basketball; it involves so much.  While I don't have the desire to let athletics take up music time, I do miss that feeling of being in great shape and feeling super strong.  I used to weightlift everyday, too.  My ideal life would be focused and intense Music study for 10-12 hours a day and exercise for 2-4.  Then drawing or whatever else I wanted besides sleep (an average of 6 hours/day) for the rest of the time.

*daydreams*

Basketball for some reason has never really appealed to me. Perhaps because i was no good at it and i am a shortarse.

However, one of my fondest memories when i was young was going to see the Harlem Globetrotters when they came to London. They had as much artistry as any pianist.

Cause I liked the way they looked! But now it says we have to buy (for grade 3) a book called Young musicians 3 which sounds kinda more cool than just Music theory... but I have never seen that book so I don't know what it's like  :-\ oh well we'll see  ::)  :)

Hey Thal, did you see the match on Wednesday night where Sir Alex rolled into town and showed the locals how to play the game? Did the commentators tell you that the match was played in the waning hours of a general strike? We all held our breath and that large exhale you heard from down South was from us.

Well, it's about time you got some "real" music into your repertoire.  I'm not putting down your baby pieces, you can still play them and you should.  On your own.  You're very capable of doing that.  And it will help you.  But, just think, your teacher had you skip grade 2!  That means she sees you are more advanced then you thought.  Good for her and good for you!!   ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

So I was right.  It IS a fish.  Karli, do you have a hatchery?  Maybe you keep them in a pond.  Good idea.  Only thing is, I wouldn't be able to kill it.  Did you know octopusses are intelligent rational living beings?  Well, rational in the sense that they can make calculations.  And the way they kill them by beating them on the rocks really irks me.  >:(

So yesterday I had music theory first time this year! :) It was ok :)  :P And we were writing dictations right away!  :o . It was scary because I almost forgot how to write notes  :-[ So I had 3 mistakes, because I just skipped one note and didn't even know... and I knew there was something wrong but I didn't know what  ::) oh well :) It was cool anyway :) And I saw the doggy!  :)  :P  8) And this is what we were doing :)

Also hanging out in airports and doing nothing else but people watching (the endless announcements and snoopers of my computer screen preclude doing anything else), I too have seen a "certain" haircut on women that has almost become a national uniform from certain countries.. My wife and I are almost 90% able to guess the nationality on sight.

:-\ I don't think so  :-\  :-[ I mean when we write dictations our teacher tells us what the first note is and in what key the dictation will be. So it's not that difficult. (except if I can't concentrate sometimes or if I don't trust myself  ::) )  :P  :)

Are you in school at a conservatory, or is musical dictation a normal school  subject in Croaxia?

You mean in Slovenia?  No we don't have musical dictations at school. I go to a music school where I have piano lessons and music theory....  :P And then at the end of the year we have exams  :) I had those last year for the first time.  :P

What is up in my life right now is that I am a little, itsy bitsy partical.  A little musical partical.  And, I floated off the page of a composer from a different world's piece of music.  That guy lives in a deep cave type place, which is actually the middle of a dormant volcano and this volcano is so huge that it is an entire planet in the middle of another solar system.  I floated out of there.  That guy lives entirely alone on his own planet in the middle of a dormant volcano.  But, it's okay, because he has neighbors; one is a waterfall planet, for example, and they communicate by vibration.

And anyway, he accidentally cut one of his softer thoughts with a diamond thought, and a drop of thinking blood fell onto his piece of music and I sizzled out of that.  And so I floated away ... up, up ... and away.  And right now I am floating in another dimension, just being a little musical partical.  It's my very own prelude to life.

Sometime I will turn into a fetus and then I'll be a baby and then I'll be somebody that people think that they know.  But, I'll still actually be that other thing deep down.  And, the first thing I'll invent is chocolate and then I'll form the entire earth into a huge marshmallow and roast it on a stick by the sun.  Then I'll eat it with the chocolate almost like a s'more, but those haven't been invented yet.  But don't worry, then I'll make everything normal again and nobody will even notice a single thing.

I LOVE, LOVE, bedtime stories.  You are right, it does sound.  I want to write a fugue and postlude (yes, postlude, not prelude) with a very secret life.  It started showing yesterday.  Yes, I actully WANT to write a fugue.  No, it's not because I want to be a dead composer.  My insides want to write a fugue.  My insides ARE a fugue  :) :'(.

Well the way I do it is that I click on the picture I want to post (in my album on photobucket) and then click on the code (it says IMG code, the last thing in "share this image") and when you click on that it copies it. Then when I'm writing a post here I just right click with my mouse so it shows some things and I click where it says paste and that's that. But Wolfi does something differently... I think he copies the link and then clicks here the "insert image" thing.....  :-\ Im not sure about that. I always do it like I said... Did you copy the right link? I mean the one where it says IMG Code?

More real??   How's that possible?   But okay, I'm not going to lie, I've been uncomfortably burny about my life and music and piano, lately.  I repeat, uncomfortably burny.   Make whatever jokes you like, people, uncomfortably burny all the same.  And, it's highly possible I will only become more burny.  Yikes I say, yikes.   All I know is that there better be some outta-this-world music that accompanies this.   It better be hauntingly beautiful at times, and actually unsurpassed in pure gorgeousness, as well as all the other stuff it better be.  And, it better be something I can't even imagine yet.  Sometimes it almost is.  Sometimes there's this "sound" that I can almost hear but not quite.

Don't let my personality quirk get you down...names have colors, you know. You're the same person regardless :) But burnout is part of life, too. However, your description, "All I know..." is just the sort of absolutely inspiring thing which wants me to strive, and wishes really that we'd all take it and strive towards some sort of realization and discover beauty all around in ourselves and in others and be thankful. Ah well, you're just one of those who breathes life in your music and in your words.

Thanks for the reminder to be thankful, because I secretly know there's a lot to be thankful for.  I'm also deeply hungry though, not actually burnt out, and very definitely hungry for more in my life.  That's sometimes a very tricky road to travel, you know?   Hungry for more but realizing, acknowledging, and practicing gratitude for all that one already has.   I guess that's part of what I am doing being up at this hour though, these are the sorts of things that I realize I must get sorted out.  I woke at 2:50am and "had" to get up and start my day, sorting these things out a bit, getting my head in the right place, starting my practicing for the day (which I hope to have be fruitful and focused (and fun :))), then I'll start teaching for 6 hours straight ... to a great mixture of students, the last one leaving 15 minutes before my "bedtime".  I was going to sleep in until 6am, you see, but my inner self had to get up instead.

So, now I sort my life a bit and soon I go to the keys and I will begrudgingly sing in a number of hours, too, since I must.  And, you see, this "little" post is my social contact with the world -- my only social contact not including my truly dear students, despite the fact that I can feel the world thinking and breathing and questioning and being ... Even the fishies in the ocean, the stars in the sky, that little child in that 3rd world country, and even the seemingly dark people in their seemingly dark lives.   And, somehow, they also feel me.

In the meantime, Wolfi, is that real??  That is ... well, quite nice.  But, just to give props to Karli, as well, she has had children named after her, too :).

Trying to swallow down how focused I am going to need to be this week, starting in about 15 minutes and counting.  Pretty soon I will feel like I'm in a tunnel again.  Tomorrow, wake up around 3:30am, get my mind straight, practice until I teach at 12:45-6:30, then rehearsal from 6:30-9:30pm.  Then straight to bed.  That's the *start* of the week.  Trying to get all psyched up and focused.  The mountain that seems to be in front of me seems daunting, so if I'm going to do it, I have no choice but to put myself into a tunnel.  Okay ... *getting psyched*

Much better than children as they don't make a noise unless you play with them and when you have finished, you just lock them in a box.

Well, like something else somewhere else on this forum, that is you prerogative alone - but, for the possible enlightenment of people here, how do you view the relationship between you and the banjo to that between you and the piano? (and I ask this on what is, after all, a forum largely devoted to pianistic matters)...

Banjo is always just fun and the music pure joy.

Piano is generaly more multi-emotional and deep. Depends on what one plays though.

OK. Thanks for that. I must confess to having written for only one of those two instruments, but perhaps the reason for which I have written for that particular one might to some extent be down to what you tell us here about what the piano is for you.

I like your theory books, too :).

Two nights ago I had the strangest dream-experience in that, I dreamt my way through an entire Bach prelude that I haven't played for about 8 years, and became conscious of it in the last line or so of it.  As I awoke and became conscious of the sound, I knew it was Bach, but I absolutely couldn't believe it was the one I had played 8 years ago!  It was as clear as day and flawlessly being played in my mind and as though it's something I've known forever!  I've never had that happen before.  It's made me think a bit on some things.

When I was a child, memorizing music was like building a room for it, and playing from memory (which is almost all I ever did since I learned by ear) was like being in that room and walking around in it.  I think it's/it can be like that still.  This Bach prelude though is part of a repertoire that has lived in some separate world for a number of years now, separate rooms that I have had almost zero access to for so long, it seems.  Now I wonder though if I can just kind of "pop into" those rooms and have those pieces back?  I don't know, but it's like I can feel them alive in me again.  And, what if I just have this huge mansion in me with all of these pieces in all of these rooms, and I can just go in there any time I want?  That would be really cool, to say the least :).

Nauk o glasbi = ? I'm not quite sure, but maybe "Theory of Music?"

So my little beautiful fish died. Just before I went to sleep. One minute before he was still swimming (he wasn't looking very well but he was still swimming) and then the next time I looked just before going to sleep he was dead.  :'(  :'( I was soooo sad! And then the other two fish came there where he was lying and stayed there swimming above him for a while and then the cleaning fish came there too after a while and he was just there besides him for a while and then moved him a little (like he would hide him into the plants) and went away. And I was crying so much. I still have swollen eyes a little! And a lot of our fish that we had died already and I'm always very sad and feel really bad but this one was even more special... I'm not sure why.... but he was just so brave for so long and he always came to see me when I came near the fish tank. and not just because I gave them food, but sometimes I just put my hand on the fish tank and i didn't even look where the fish were, and then when I looked he was almost always exactly where my hand was and just looking at me and if I put my face close to the fish tank he came really close too. So he was really special and I miss him!!  :(  :'( And he was really beautiful too, I will post a picture of him after a while. I didn't really sleep very much cause I was crying for a long time..... and then I thought that maybe he will come to see me in my dreams. And then I wasn't dreaming exactly about him.... but I was dreaming about water. About a lot of different kinds of waters. Like there were huge rivers and little rivers and some were green and some were blue and some were like crystal clear waters, and some were very deep and some were not... and it was like really weird it was like you could see all of these waters at the same time and then you could choose into which one you wanted to go. I don't exactly remember what you had to do to choose one...  :-\ but it was just really easy just like thinking about it or something like that  :-\ and you were there.... and it was really weird and beautiful and interesting and fun and cool too! So then when I woke up I thought that this must be a fish heaven! Or maybe my fish now has to decide in which of those waters he is going to live in his next life. I don't know I just hope he is ok! And that he knows I love him!!!

Yes Nauk o glasbi is Theory of Music.... but if you translated it exactly it would be more like Theory about Music... oh well ... or maybe.... I guess of and about is not so different right? I mean you can say: speaking about, or speaking of.... so I guess it's exactly Theory of music yes.
And Mali glasbeniki means: Little musicians :) .... mali means little. So in my language I would be Malamelodija :)

Hey, littletune, I'm really sorry to hear about your fish... It's always very painful when you lose somebody you love... I had a dog, she was about 11 years old... She died last year because of a stupid accident. I still miss her but, fortunately, time heals...

Yes, it's really tough when you lose pet friend.  I used to think it wasn't fair that they lived such short lives, but then I realized it was better they went before me, because if I went before them who would take care of them?

Right :) There's a movie about story like that - 'Hachiko' . It's about a dog who loses his master.. I don't have yet enough courage to see this movie, but I know it's very good :)

Well I still miss my fish a lot and it makes me sad he's not here anymore  :(
I found another bruise on my arm.
We have 10 days of school holidays!  :P But I'll have music school anyway  :P (except on monday November 1st I don't have music theory).
For Christmas recital I will be playing: Joy To The World and probably one other piece too maybe Bourree or Vivace. (Sorry Birba no Sonatinas yet). But I hope that tomorrow I get that book with Sonatinas.
Oh one neighbour has complained about me again  ::) but fortunately not about piano!! He said to my mum that when I go for a walk with my dog that I come back with dirty shoes and then the stairs get dirty too  ::) which is not even true. And my mum said to him that if I came home with dirty shoes she would be the first to notice it. And that it's a lot worse that some people are throwing cigarets on the stairs and spitting.
And one other neighbour has complained about trees (that were near our aparment building and were really beautiful and great) :o so they just cut them down  :o  >:( so stupid! I really don't know why the poor trees were bothering her cause they weren't even that close to her window! So we have neighbours that hate music and trees and animals and kids and nature.... and everything I guess  :-\
Maybe I wanted to say something else but i forgot...  :P

I have got a cold.
Then treat it with plenty of rest (I assume that you do not have to go to work over the weekend), some suitable medication to relieve it (nothing will actually cure it, as you know) and a wee dram or three of something from my country (and I didn't have raspberry juice in mind, although a little heather honey in the liquid that I did have in mind might not gang aglae come amiss)...

I hope that you get rid of it quickly!

Best,

Alistair

Indeed this is a good idea, but for some reason, whenever I have a cold i get the incredible urge to drink cream soda which i never touch when well.

Depending on the works concerned, that sounds rahter more palatable than the cream soda that you mentioned earlier; I'm not convinced that either of them or the cream soda will do much to relieve a common cold, however. No, it is, of course, the amber nectar of that country some way to the north of Gravesend that I had in mind - and, for a musical connection thereto, I can perhaps do no better than to mention a conversation that I had on a walk with Ronald Stevenson years ago in which, some time after he quoted Nielsen's remark that "music is the sound of life" and then talked about that, we somehow got to the point where he mentioned that "whisky is the water of life", to which I had the temerity and lack of discretion to conclude "so the music of Stevenson is the sound of whisky!".

So - a wee tot or two of a fine malt imbibed slowly as you listen to Stevenson's song cycle Border Boyhood and then to bed, methinks; 'twill work wonders!

Best,

Alistishoo (excuse me)

Hmm well... I don't think they are so very known  :-\ So I guess you won't like that  ::)  :P
They are: J.B. Vanhal, C. Gurlitt, C. Reinecke, J.A. Andre, J. Pleyel, T. Haslinger, D. Steibelt, F. Spindler, H. Spittler, oh and also: D.G. Turk,T. Attwood.

A nice batch of composers. Vanhal wrote a few Sonatines Progressives which i think would be ideal for you at the moment as you begin to develop your technique.

Spindler also wrote a fair bit for youngsters and his music can be fun. He wrote a extremely flamboyant Piano Concerto that i totally failed to play despite considerable hours spent.

Perhaps one day you will give the World Premier.

Well today was kinda weird at my piano lesson because when I played one piece, that i thought I had learned well, I was making really a lot of mistakes (and I wasn't making mistakes at home), but then there's this other piece that I really didn't expect I could play all that well (because I was still making mistakes when I was practicing at home) and I played it really well without mistakes and my teacher said I didn't need to practice it anymore and I was really surprised! Hmm well I don't think so... it's like with the left hand (first 4 bars) you hold f all the time and play f,a,c,a and with the right hand you play f,a,f and c,a and c,f,a and a,f... I can take a picture of it if you want... but you'll hear it when I learn it anyway  :P  :) First movement is Andantino and the second one is Allegretto.

And today I was dreaming that a bee flew into my mouth and I couldn't get it out and it was really scary and I couldn't breath through my mouth because of the bee but I couldn't breath very well through my nose either cause I had a cold in my dream too. So it was really scary! But then in the end the bee finally flew out of my mouth and I think that was at a doctor and I was really happy but then I started worrying about the bee and I thought we shouldn't just leave it at the doctor but that we should take it somewhere else. I have weird dreams!  :P Well I guess that's cause I'm weird anyway  :P  :P

I'm down to only 5 students, last week the twins will be moving to China....I had 7 students...
this is quite discouraging for me.  I use to have 21 students 2 years ago!  :P
Well, I'm considering a career change.  I am in the process of getting most of my art work
framed and visit galleries to get them displayed.  It may take awhile but hopefully it will
work out.  I will have 2 of my oil paintings on an exhibition next month.   :)I'm excited about
that and hopefully someone will buy my paintings.  Anyhow, life has a way of changing things.
I've been working hard on my art for over a year and it has been more rewarding for me.
If more students come along, then that's great....

I've been working hard on my art for over a year and it has been more rewarding for me.
If more students come along, then that's great....

How about teaching art students too?

I could teach, but right now I'm not in the frame of mind to deal with people.
I think I'll work on my own and I have some great ideas on what to paint and draw,
starting next month.    :)
