Title: Bartok - what does "Sz." mean?
Post by: Skeptopotamus on July 17, 2005, 01:23:44 AM
this is kind of embarassing.... but does anyone know what "Sz." stands for?  I don't mean in music, but I mean when used in cataloguing music, like Bartok Sonata (1926) Sz. 81

like Op. is Opus; what is Sz.?

Szöllösy

As in "Andras Szöllösy" (b. 1921) - the guy who went to the trouble of cataloguing all of Bartok's works in 1957 in his "Bibliographie des oeuvres musicales et écrits musicologiques de Béla Bartok".

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

You will have to ask Aniam:

Who are you and what have you done with Bernhard???

This can't be Bernhard himself speaking here. A normal Bernhard answer would have looked like this:

1. quote of the question
2. little introduction in which Bernhard claims that this is a very confusing/obscure topic, and that it is only his subjective opinion, or some similar back-up, which is of course completely useless because it will be THE answer anyway
3. the answer, in this case, prononciation of each letter, prononciation of the whole name
4. link to the page where Bernhard has got it from
5. link to a page where you can listen to it being pronounced
6. A short but very detailed lecture (2 posts) about the origin of the Hungarian language, its relationship with Finnish and Estonian.
7. A short but very detailed lecture about Hungarian phonology. How it relates to music. How it relates to piano playing.
8. A very detailed guide line to learning Hungarian, or Maygar as the Hungarian says. Showing how the basic principles of piano practice can be applied to learning a language. Giving a link to 4 good "Learn Hungarian" sites, 7 links to good Hungarian books on Amazon, a list of 50 obscure Hungarian composers, their main works, how their music was influenced by the language.
9. A basic guide line to using a search engine to come up with these results alone. Applying this guide line to piano practice.
10. "Just the tip of the iceberg.  ;)"
11. "Best wishes, Bernhard" (you got that point)
12. A dozen of grateful responses later (Mostly consisting of: "Bernhard, you are a genius", or "thanks a million times, Bernhard"): "You are welcome. Best wishes, Bernhard." (If other questions arised in the responses, Bernhard might have posted a list of links to the answers, many links, of course, or might have answered them right away).

So, back to the original question: Where is Bernhard and how do we get him back? *imagines Bernhard being kidnapped by the Piano Mafia, having to respond here to avoid too much stir and alarms. Imagines Bernhard trying to posting sevret help messages by posting things in which he does not respond the question. Imagines how the Piano Mafia reads this and is not very happy with Bernhard. oO, sorry Bernhard.*

 ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, ahem, well. Of course normally I would have done all this, but now I have no time anymore, so read for yourself:

thanx i guess...

Now normally this is where I

1. Quote you
2. Say something that may sound like a compliment but is really an insult
3. insult you directly for wasting my time
4. talk about Iannis Xenakis
5. yell at you some more
6. get flamed
7. fight with every single person on the forum
8. quickly divert the subject back to bartok after getting in one more quick insult

but it's too late at night for all that =P

"sz" is one letter in hugarian, pronounced "s" (as in "spring")

as for the origins and history of the hungarian people & their language, i'll let bernhard have the honour :)
