How will we know which octave to play?

that's what's good about the grand staff.  you have the ability to pin-point the exact place on the keyboard with the written note.  C's are the best markers.  take middle C - written between the two staves with it's own short leger line through it, and then one octave up or down is on the third space up or down respectively.  then above or below the stave are two written lines with the note on the second line (respectively either on the farthest line from center).  these are two octaves from middle C.

everything played below middle C is usually played with your left hand.  try playing the C below with your fifth finger, middle C with your thumb, and the high C with RH fifth finger.
