Title: Your careers
Post by: NetherMagic on August 23, 2003, 08:22:33 AM
Just curious, who here are currently or planning to be in a career not involved with music but is at the same time a music lover (and I mean explicity the piano)

And if you are, what's your career?

To start it off, I'm planning to be a doctor, a specialist if I can, and I know its a hard road but oh well ;D

This is an interesting post.  ;D
I don't plan on becoming a concert pianist or anything like that. I would love to be able to play the piano just from the heart and not have to worry about which fingers are in the right place and if the timing is soooo precise. Anyway, now that I got my two cents in,  ;) I'm an office coordinator at the local hospital here and I plan on becoming either an accountant or a secretary but I will continue to play the piano and love it.  :)

I am aiming to ultimately work in the field of music.  I would like to Juilliard.  If I am not accepted, then I'm sure that's a sign to go onto something else (ie. Medicine and/or R&D).  It is wise to always have your credits for subjects for other options in the future.  I am still taking my Phyics and Chemistry and I am racking up credits to get a better chance to get accepted in a medical university should I not be accepted at the music school of my choice.

xenon you seem to see medschool as somethin easier than music

altho music takes talent, medicine takes lotsa brains too.  And I'm not saying you don't got any, but it just seems that for a moment there you seem to think medicine as an easy career there  ;D

Hehe... Actually, Medicine used to be my first choice and I recieved top honours in my science classes, and I even did some preliminary study in the field of medicine, but I feel that music has a greater calling.  It's not any easier, just an alternative ;).

But I would say music and medicine goes hand in hand, no?

I dunno. From what I see, doctors and ICE HOCKEY go together!  Half of the guys on my team are physicians.  When you two get out of med school put out a post to explain that little connection to me!

As for me, I am in in a totally crappy line of work - IT computer system analysis and design.  I was always told it would be such a great line of work, but now I am out of work and seeing all the jobs go to Indians and off-shore companies.  Now I am looking at teaching piano lessons to get by.  Believe it or not, it will pay more if I get students!

Med school is an exellent thing to do - watch the specialties that have horrid malpractice, and you'll be fine!

haha Dinosaurtales for some reason all the friends I know who play ice hockey know like nothing about music, and they don't have a good attitude toward music either... well at least piano, you know, they're up to like stuff like drums and stuff

and wow ice hockey and med haha still gotta wait to see those combos appear around my neighbourhood

I guess if someone gets injured during bodychecking or something they don't havta worry for waiting for the ambulance to get there!

And yes specialists rock, not only you get good pay but you get good respect and you can also help lotsa ppl and cure interesting cases instead of the normal cold that the normal family physician handles iunno lets just say too many times

NetherMagic you crack me up.  Sometimes I think I don't know anything about music either.  Geez.

Med. rel. jobs are at an all-time high because of the demand.  Well, what I see is that doctors see the need for physical activity to keep in good health, so they would tag along for the fun of it.  Doctor>hockey would make sense, but Hockey>Doctor is a more rare breed.

DragonTales> perhaps you should go into webdesign.  I've seen many poor (design related) companies make huge sums of money.  Sigh, why can't people see that those companies suck?  Ah well... I'll search more actively for a webdesign job.
