Title: Hi... trying to choose an upright in the 3k to 4k price bracket.

Hi there,

I've been doing a fair bit of research into uprights; at the moment I'm considering a new Yamaha C110 for 3600 (from the best dealer in the country) one of a number of 20-year old Kawai's for about 3900 (from a good dealer) or a new, cheaper, but still pretty good Kohler and Campbell 142 or 145 (i.e. a Samick) (from an OKish dealer) for about 2500 or maybe less.

My piano usage will be musical theatre-type plinking and plonking, nothing fancy, mainly for myself.

I am pretty set on going to a dealer... I prefer to pay the premium for delivery, tuning, and warranties etc.

* I generally like the feel and sound of the Yamaha and Kawai's. I haven't tried as many K&C's.
* I like the idea of a 10 year warranty from the superb dealer, but realise I'm paying a premium for 'newness'.

Note: I'm located in Ireland, so therefore don't have a massive choice of second hands from dealers.

Any input or observations would be appreciated....

Looked at any of the Eastern European stuff? Petrov, Bohemia, or others?

Or how about something like a nice used Knight?

Thanks for the input... not much doing in the second hand world.. most older pianos are outside my size range (58.5 inches maximum width). I played a series of wonderful 20 year old Kawai's (BS-20 etc) but they were all to big for the space.

So I decided (yesterday) on a spanking new Yamaha C110 from the best dealer in town (with the best techs).

Even better this dealer offers an 80% trade-in against a more expensive piano... yes 80% of the price you paid with no time limit!
