Title: Attachment uploads now available on all piano boards!
Post by: nilsjohan on November 17, 2005, 05:23:19 PM
Yes, that's it.
To avoid the annoying issue when you link to files that are essential for the discussion in a topic and the files are then removed from that location we do now let you host the files as attachments on our server.

Currently we allow mp3, pdf, jpg and gif files. Are there any other file types that you feel  is important to allow?

Mid and MUS yes, Wav no. And thanks Nils for doing this, sending sheets (which aren't in the gold member thing ofcourse) is way easier now.

Attachments are only allowed in the piano boards, not in the "Anything but Piano" section.

I think png should also be accepted, they are usuallly the most efficient format for scores fragments.

What is png exactly?  Comapred to something like jpg.  Is png uncompressed?

Sometimes it is fustrating when you google an image that says in is png format and you want to embed the image here. I second that. and all other image formats still not mentioned.

It is very generous of the sysop to allow hosting. In response, let's all be respectful of this gesture and compress our files.

To answer a question posted above, PNG is a compressed cross platform graphics format. I first heard of it from Alchemy Mindworks https://www.mindworkshop.com/  You will see it used now and then, mostly for letterheads in emails.

Perhaps even Microsoft word because sometimes I can't convert to PDF.

I think mov.'s are just too big, in general.

This is great..   I think video files would be a great addition, in any format really..  but I guess that would be too much to ask given the size potential. And i guess not everyone can convert their files and get them down to a size/quality that's acceptable.

Get Open Office (free) from Oracle and it will do PDF. Why pay for Word?

cute pdf writer

You can "print" to a pdf file.  That one worked better for me for music notation in the past.

MOV. is  a format you can open with Quick Time or VLC (VideoLan); with the latter, you can open almost every file format

Ahh that's what it is called. I usually download movies and I can't view them on WMP so I had to use VLC.  ;D

Is mp4 there?

VLC has everything, and you can download it for free...

Grazie, for the tip. I kept on relying on WMP for everything and before I knew it I was addicted to it. I only used VLC in my other computer. I never knew it was free. How silly of me..

Is VLC the one written by (former?) French tech school students?

Someone mentioned it to me for mp4 playback but I wasn't sure it was stable. Glad to hear others are using it without problems.

I usually use quick time player since I don't have the VLC installed in the laptop I am using right now and can't be bothered doing it though it is free. But VLC is the second best option out there after WMP.

Yeah I have Open Office, being far too tight to invest in Word - ;D  It is awesome you can get quality like this for free.

When I wanted to put Word on my new computer the cost was incredible and there were features included for which I had no use.

Open Office is a much better option. Keep in mind that it is "open source" like Firefox, so you may encounter a bug. However, I also encountered bugs with Word.
