Title: Student's Recitals
Post by: sarahlein on January 03, 2006, 10:24:08 AM
What are your students' favorite recital pieces?

It can be anything between grades 1-8 (ABRSM) or Beginner to early Advanced if you prefer.

Please provide composer's name, approximate level and if possible where to get the sheet music for it (any audio excerpts are a plus)

So can anyone help?

I can help to feel a little left out here... :'(

I mean, with 100 views, someone might at least say something, anything!

I'm looking for fresh ideas on recital pieces. The repertoire links on the Forum are great but most of the time I'm not sure how perfomable the suggested pieces are. How well will they do for an audience made up mostly of parents and friends.

You have surely have had your share of student's recitals (some posts above mine-er...  now below.. are about just that!) so please allow me to benefit from you experience. Please.... :)

Most of my students play out of the RCM books...I let them choose pieces they like. There's a huge variety of repertoire in the books, so some play Baroque or Classical; the younger ones often prefer the more fun modern pieces, like Robots in the Grade 1 book, or Crocodile Teeth in the Grade 2 book. Christopher Norton's pieces are very popular; Linda Niamath, Nancy Telfer are two wonderful Canadian composers who've written lots of pieces children like.  Also Boris Berlin (March of the Goblins) and Clifford Poole (Mist, The Mouse in the Coal Bin).

Since I'm on the subject of Canadian composers, how could I have forgotten Anne Crosby?

You can get all this good stuff from frederickharris.com (ftp://frederickharris.com), that is if you're in North America. I don't think they're good at handling stuff for overseas yet.
