Title: Bach Transcriptions
Post by: astroboy on February 15, 2006, 04:11:07 PM
Hi.. I am currently in love with Bach's Violin Partita no. 2 in d minor. I know Busoni and Brahms have written transcriptions of the Chaconne from it, and Rachmaninoff wrote a transcription of Bach's E major Partita. I was just wondering if any other composers have written transcriptions of any other of Bachs fantastic solo violin works? Thanks!

Ryan

I have various transcriptions by Saint-Saens, Friedman, Godowsky and Siloti.

Bach is a transcribers paradise, so there must be more.

PM me if you would like some.

Not really a transcription but Reger´s variations in B minor Op 81 on a theme by Bach are the greatest variations ever written.

He also made a transcription of Toccata and Fugue in D minor and IMO is far better than the Busoni´s.

Godowsky transcribed 3 of Bach's Cello Suites. I am inclined to ask "why?", but whatever...

I still think Busoni's is the best though.  It's famous for a reason.

The Hyperion CD label has 5 releases in its series of Bach transcriptions. Check them out--some are rather obscure but interesting! You can then hunt down the scores.
